People like that... you feel guilty and helpless because that's how they want you to feel. That's why they make a public show of wallowing in self-pity or being friendless. Making and keeping friends is hard, but whining about it is easy. I won't tell you not to feel sorry for them, OP, but at least realize that they're their own worst enemy. You can't meet their emotional needs because their emotional needs are bottomless and because they won't lift a finger to help themselves first.
