"In multicultural cities Japanese/Koreans are gaining 'white privilege'"

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen this argument made on a few PoC blogs. Is this seriously something that many people believe or is it another version of divide and conquer?

Holy shit, that's offensive.

Isn't that called 'model minority', which still has it's own problems? They're just renaming it? Huh?

Yep. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY.

Ahahaahaha. That is great. They need to hate someone so much they are now turning other races white so they have privilege. Do they sound like Stormfront memebers? "And those Japs coming over here and taking our jobs from hard working African Americans!" I assume the PoC blogs in question are moderated by black people.

So now that Hispanics are white people, and Japanese/Korean are becoming white people, what POC are left?

I recently watched the documentary "Good Hair", which was actually really fascinating, but I was taken aback at the end, where Chris Rock was commenting on the fact that most of the hair products were being sold from Asia, so a 'bunch of white people in Asia are making money from black hair'.

I've got no dog in this fight, but I did think - so we're lumping them all in as white now??

Is it wrong that this doesn't seem crazy to me?

Assuming that we're talking about privilege as a complicated and multi-variable thing, the idea that Asian-Americans are regarded differently as regards race in comparison to other POCs seems reasonable. And that could, and probably does, result in a kind of privilege, comparable in some places to white privilege, even while Asian-Americans are still minorities.

OFC if you're just turning it into "Asian-Americans are the white devil now, hate their honky asses" then yes, that is crazy.

Oh no, you said "Americans." Your argument is invalid for US-centricism.

(No, I agree. People who point out the argument about white privilege also note that other groups that are now taken for granted as white in America, such as Irish and Italians, were considered nonwhite at points in the past because back then they lacked what is now called white privilege.)

I sometimes get the feeling that to some of those people the only "proper POC" is the stereotypical ~black goddess~ type of person and everyone with a lighter skintone than dark caramel at the least doesn't qualify as POC.

Considering that I saw Princess and the Frog being hailed by many people to be the first Disney movie featuring a POC princess/female lead (rather than just the first black princess), I think you may be right. I guess Jasmine, Pochahontas, Mulan, Kida, Lilo and Esmeralda just don't count...

This is probably a concept thought up by people who've never heard of the concept of a "model minority".

I'm the first to admit I forget that tone doesn't carry across the Internet so well, so I don't feel bad about saying I have no idea where you're going with this/what you're trying to say, here. *could use some clarification*

Whilst the model minority is a real concept and problem, it is frequently used by groups to deny the very real privilege that they do have.

Racial privilege =/= white privilege, is the point I was trying to make.

I mean, not all races and POCs face the same problems. i.e. Black people face a lot of discrimination, but immigration is rarely a problem for them in general, but it is a huge problem for Latinos.

Maybe it's just me, but the idea that different races can have different privileges or advantages while still ultimately being at a disadvantage in comparison to the dominant race is obvious. Trying to imply that Asian-Americans are often better off than most other POCs is the same as them having white privilege, is needlessly provocative.

I mean, on any given spectrum or issue, some people fare better than others, but that does not mean that people "in the middle" or experiencing less oppression/discrimination face no oppression or discrimination. Yet claiming Asian-Americans have white privilege does exactly that.

I don't think anyone (except maybe a few idiots) is saying they have white privilege... yet. Even the subject title here says the claim is that they're gaining it. I think the claims are that this has happened before with other ethnic groups that were once considered "separate" and are now plainly "white," and the same pattern is emerging in the changing treatment of certain Asian groups.

Ah. That makes more sense. I guess I'm personally still unsure about the likelihood of that. A big part of that is just that racism is so strongly based on outward appearance, and I can't help but feel that it was easy to incorporate other "non-white" races into the category of "white" was because, well, they already were white (as in, of European descent). While definitely Asian-Americans are gaining privilege in comparison to other POC's, it's still...not comparable to the assimilation of various European ethnic minorities into the white majority.

Then again, I also recently dealt with someone who insisted Irish-Americans were still a minority facing discrimination in America, and I just...I don't even know what to do with that.

NAYRT, but they're saying that, in their eyes, Asian-Americans do enjoy all the benefits of privilege, and so arguments about being the 'model minority' are specious, and only used as an excuse for one's own failings.

Maybe it's part of some elaborate practical joke but tbh my reading is that they're just being real shitty and aggro.
