I really just don't get why people care about it so much. When I say "I don't get it", I don't mean I think it's actually devoid of value. I just mean that I PERSONALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND IT AT THIS POINT IN TIME and therefore I'd be a moron to make any claims about how valid/invalid/dumb/meaningful it is. I don't make a habit of judging things I don't understand. It would be like me trying to make a judgement of the Dow Jones Industrial Average when I have no idea how it works.

I'd truly, sincerely be very glad if someone could explain to me why non-binary genders are important. In my view right now, all a gender really needs to be is a pronoun, a census checkmark, and a bathroom designation, but I'd be more than open to having my opinion changed. However, I've looked around the internet trying to find a good explanation, and I haven't come up with anything that isn't a modified version of 1950s ultra-rigid gender role propaganda.

They're important because people aren't binary. Not even genetically. To group all humans into A and B when there's so much more diversity in that even at the level of DNA is just garbage. Unfortunately most of society still does this, and until very recently it was not considered out of line to take an intersex individual and assign a gender at birth based on the appearance of their genitals.

Now we know that forcing someone to live in a gender role with which they don't personally identify is incredibly psychologically damaging, as is denying people who are non-binary a role in society.

I definitely understand this, but IMO that more a problem with the obsession with gender roles being used to define everything about a human being. Forcing someone to live in a gender role is damaging, but I guess I don't really see how non-binary genders helps the fundamental problem that rigid, narrow gender roles are not inherent or natural.

It's not Gender F, Gender M, and Gender N. Nonbinary is everything else, not a specific third point.

Gender roles exist because a gender binary exists. If you remove the concept of the binary, the roles disappear with it.

True, but I don't think that's the only way the roles will disappear.

Well, for one it gives validity to the idea that an XXY person - for example - can exist as something that is normative rather than abnormal or worse, something they "made up". I mean, all you really need to do is read this thread and you can already get an idea of how many people feel that they simply don't exist. And this is even a more progressive forum than most.

You can talk about abolishing gender roles all you like ( and hell, I'd heartily agree with you on that count) but sadly the only way to really change perception on a global scale is to institutionalize something.

I was under the impression that people with supernumary sex chromosome and other such sex-noodling situations were generally cis.

Like, an XXY person generally develops as a male and identifies as a man. And someone with complete androgen insensitivity disorder generally develops as a female and identifies as a woman.

Intersex people can be identify as a particular gender, too. I knew someone who was intersex and he identified as male because that was what he felt like he was supposed to be.

And I should clarify, his parents tried to raise him as female but he refused it because he felt that he was male, not that he identified as male because that was what other people wanted him to be.

That's actually not the case at all. There are a lot of XXY people who identify as female or third gender. There is really no single study of intersex people that can claim to a show an average sexuality or gender identity, simply because those individuals can be so hard to contact.

In these cases we can only refer to case studies or numbers of procedures that have been performed, and that's probably not all that indicative of reality.
