Though inkdust once wrote a very logical and insightful post on the concept of gender, thanks to which I can now say that I kind of understand what gender is, I still have just about zero idea how it actually works. How it feels to be "male"? Or "female"? What is the biological reality behind these feelings, if any?

To me, there is no difference between saying that one "feels" oneself to be a woman and saying that one "feels" oneself to be [insert random non-binary gender]. I don't see why one should be less valid than the other; I understand neither, anyway :D

Men, women, and that third gender that is neither/both. I will call you him, her, they, mayyybbeeeee ze if you are not an asshole about it. but don't expect me to remember your shitty tumblr pronouns (thon/thon, ey/em, tel/tela, insertthing/insertthinga).

All those other ones seem to be people who have more rigid gender stereotypes than a Texan republican. "I was born female but I like to play with trucks. THEREFORE I MUST BE NON-BINARY!"

Maybe it's just the areas I hang out in, but I feel like a lot of originally girls identify as non-binary and I don't see much the other way around. I kind of wonder if there's a sort of self-hating aspect to it.

I roll with whatever people identify as, though I have some reservations about the whole thing. It's not really worth the effort.

Gender is a social construct, and I don't believe that one can actually be something that is not represented in our society, regardless of whether they identify as such. I will roll my eyes at it, and if you try to involve me in it against my will (insist I call you "zir", refer to me as such, write long essays explaining why you are the way you are [no one is that special, fyi]), I will write you off as a moron and do my best to avoid contact with you.

It's a phase. Someone will come up with a new idea to make themselves unique, others will latch onto it, it will spread like wildfire, and people will forget about this.

Re: What are your thoughts on non-binary genders?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda stupid. I don't think any non-physical attribute "makes" someone a woman or a man. To clarify, I'm not anti-trans or anything, I totally respect someone feeling more comfortable in society's gender construct of the opposite gender. No problem with that at all, by all means. But most non-binary gender arguments seem deeply rooted in stereotypes to me, which is total bullshit, and I hate how people are perpetuating them in the name of being super progressive. Why should we "identify" as a gender at all? Or even if we do identify with our gender, we need to accept that some women like pants and trucks, and some men enjoy dance lessons.

It just seems like we should be fighting gender stereotypes and reducing "what it means" to be a man or a woman, not introducing new "identities" so everyone has a neat little label to "describe" themselves.

The only people I could sympathize with insisting on gender neutral pronouns, honestly, is people that are physically intersex. Maybe, just maybe, people who want to stress that their gender doesn't define them or whatever, but for the most part it just seems like a massive case of special snowflakeness.

Mixed feelings. On the one hand, I'm not exactly normal (whatever that is supposed to mean.) On the other hand, I worry that some of the non-binary discussion carries with it some hidden essentialism. If you are not this or that, you must be essentially this third thing. And then that is used to engage in some ugly identity policing of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people (especially the latter).

However, if someone wants to be identified as they, it, zie, or ir, I have no objections to doing so.

I really just don't get why people care about it so much. When I say "I don't get it", I don't mean I think it's actually devoid of value. I just mean that I PERSONALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND IT AT THIS POINT IN TIME and therefore I'd be a moron to make any claims about how valid/invalid/dumb/meaningful it is. I don't make a habit of judging things I don't understand. It would be like me trying to make a judgement of the Dow Jones Industrial Average when I have no idea how it works.

I'd truly, sincerely be very glad if someone could explain to me why non-binary genders are important. In my view right now, all a gender really needs to be is a pronoun, a census checkmark, and a bathroom designation, but I'd be more than open to having my opinion changed. However, I've looked around the internet trying to find a good explanation, and I haven't come up with anything that isn't a modified version of 1950s ultra-rigid gender role propaganda.

Re: What are your thoughts (repost of missfire)

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-07-06 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
From a psychological standpoint? Perfectly valid. The concept of female and male brain differences with regard to function is pretty ephemeral at best, but there are a few clear differences between neurotypical and atypical brain structures that are thought to define sex instincts.

Biological psychology currently tends to extrapolate differences in the size of hypothalamic nuclei as correlating to gender identity. Experimental evidence currently concludes that these structural differences can be induced by controlling horomone levels in pregnant rats (ex. an excess of estrogen in pregnant females will result in XY rats which display species-typical female grooming, mating, and social behaviours as well as appropriate brain changes).

It's not a stretch to think that underdevelopment of other brain areas might lead to a weak or nonexistent gender/sex role concept. If there was, say, a lower than normal concentration of any prenatal sex hormones in utero my guess is that a fetus might well grow up to identify as agendered or asexual.

tl;dr as far as we know there's a biological basis to this, so regardless of whether or not you understand how a person could "feel female" or "feel male" (or neither), there's plenty of evidence that they can and do. Probably because there would be no reason to pay attention to any feeling until something was obviously incongruous or deviant from common behaviours.

I don't really have any strong feelings or thoughts on it. In practice, I'd probably find it a bit confusing/ counter-intuitive to consider a person in front of me either neither or both male and female, but then, as long as I'm somehow clear on how the pronouns should work I don't really care all that much.

I think the idea of 'non-binary gender' gets a bad reputation because it's something that's so tied up into the whole internet SJW culture. I have a good friend who is non-binary. They were considering transitioning, but that didn't feel right either. I think it's a legitimate thing, and anyone who feels like such has the right. /shrugs

Apathetic?

Actually, that's probably not the right word. But basically, I think people have the right to make up their own mind and - unless they're trying to decide my own gender/telling me my gender identity isn't valid - I don't really care what someone identifies as beyond wanting to know what pronouns they want used.

My thoughts are that people get to decide for themselves what they are and what they should be called. It isn't my place to decide for someone else who they are. I personally like the plural they, but I understand why others don't. So I'll call people what they want to be called.

I think the whole concept of gender separate from biological sex is stupid. There. I said it.

I agree that things like boys should wear blue and girls, pink is wrong but I don't think not fitting that idea makes me a boy or a special snowflake. I don't think hair styles change gender. I don't think clothing preferences change gender. I don't think hobbies change gender.

I have to admit I roll my eyes slightly when I see posts where someone talks about how they don't like makeup and they love sports, so therefore they CANNOT be female. I feel like it's one step away from the common "I'm better than all those other girls because I don't care about silly things like they do" viewpoint.

Other than that I whole handedly agree with the concept. Like many identities that have popularly spread on tumblr, I do believe there are many who appropriate the labels but that there are also a fair number that can claim it as a valid, legitimate identity.

Not to mention that it's also something that far predates tumblr, but yeah.

I have a few non binary friends, and am pretty muddy on my own gender (as in, I don't feel strongly about it), and I don't think it's about stereotypes or anything like that. All of them had a long period of reflection before deciding on anything, usually lasting at least a year. One even was worried they were just "being trendy" despite several years of reflection.

I don't know if my friends are atypical among those who say they are non binary, but I am certain that non binary people exist.

Also, I think non binary genders as a concept existed before tumblr and sj and even the internet.
