Re: What are your thoughts on non-binary genders?

I think the whole concept of gender separate from biological sex is stupid. There. I said it.

I agree that things like boys should wear blue and girls, pink is wrong but I don't think not fitting that idea makes me a boy or a special snowflake. I don't think hair styles change gender. I don't think clothing preferences change gender. I don't think hobbies change gender.

Annnnnd this is actually the legacy of the tumblr approach to gender: that people like you don't actually understand "gender is separate from sex" means.

Hair styles, clothing, and hobbies don't change what sex a person is. You are not less of a woman for enjoying cars; you are not less of a man for enjoying make-up. "Gender" refers to the set of cultural norms that code the enjoyment of cars as "masculine" and the enjoyment of make-up as "feminine."

These people who think that not fitting into the mold makes them "a boy or a special snowflake?" They don't fucking understand it, either. They have a very, very superficial view of it. They never got to the part where gender doesn't actually matter, because it's all so much bullshit.

And I don't get that. I really don't. It's seems so simple. I guess that's my conceit.

The type of people who would identify as "Non-binary" are working on the tumblr definition.

Thank you. I think it's obvious that gender identity doesn't always match our cultural expectations based on sex, but I don't think gender has any meaning without reference to physical sex, since no one can seem to define "gender" without bringing the structure and appearance of our physical bodies into the explanation (at least not without being so vague that there is nothing to distinguish "gender" from other descriptors like "culture" or "occupation.") If our sex was completely irrelevant, surely no one would ever feel body dismorphia based on gender/sex or want sex-reassignment surgery.
