Also I think apparating so far away might be risky and very hard, definitely also considering not all wizards have the same magical abilities, so there must be lots of people who also never learn to apparatesafely or even very far. Such mass moving of people seems much more logical by port key.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)iirc it was a ratio of 2 underage kids to 1 adult with the whole group accounted for, so the adults would have had to make two trips each at least - whether or not Percy could perform Side-Along. That would have meant deciding who to leave standing on Stoatshead Hill unattended while they went back for the others. given what had just happened at the World Cup (and how Mrs. Weasley reacted), it's plausible Arthur didn't want to leave anyone without supervision even if just for a minute or two.
just all the thinking going on in this comment thread is already taking more time than it would have taken to just grab a Portkey!
