What would your ideal fandom be like?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Essentially you get to nuke everything you don't like and have everything you do like. Play God, but on a small scale.

What does it look like?

Re: What would your ideal fandom be like?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, for starters, the fandom wouldn't be dominated by one or two pairings. There'd be a lot of variety and plenty of fic/fanart for lots of pairings. There'd be more fic featuring my favorite characters as well.

There'd be no character bashing, no ship bashing, no ship wars or petty drama.

Re: What would your ideal fandom be like?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
There would be a huge amount of widely varied fanart and fanfic for every possible ship, no matter how random. Nobody ever ships what I ship :(

If I could control the real-world circumstances of the fandom's existence, my fantasy would be somewhat different (although it would still have that). It would be a TV show or a movie, and I would be the somehow-nearly-universally-respected actor who plays the badass but heartwrenching character a large majority of the fandom loves.

Lots of sappy friendshippy gen, lots of awesome case fic with wonderfully structured plots. Very little shipping, but the shipping that does take place is very diverse and there are all kinds of insane pairings.

Many AUs, but fewer than the number of the canon!verse fic.

Oh, and it'd be multimedia. Fanart, fanfic, gifs, meta, cosplay - everything.

It would also be pretty small and have next to no drama. That is it.

Less shipping, way more intelligent discussion. More forums and fansite archives as opposed to LJ and DW.

Basically fandoms of the early 2000s.

Eh, it looks pretty much like it does now, only anyone who bitches about Steven Moffat gets shot in the head. People talk about the show, not how they hate the showrunner and inventing reasons why the show must suck because he is running it.

Re: What would your ideal fandom be like?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No flame wars, most people would get along [and those that can't would at least be civil], pairing stuff would mostly be kept to seperate comms [...and yes, it would be back on lj/dw].

Oh, and people would have the common sense not to do stupid, aggressively offensive shit.

But yeah, totally unrealistic and not something that would ever actually happen.

Hmmm....well first of all, it would be with a creator who is either accepting of fanfiction or doesn't care.

People will probably ship, but they don't hold shipping above everything to the point where they disregard or ignore things to claim their ship is canon. Ideally they wouldn't even care if their ship is canon or not.

While some may disagree with the creator and/or have their own interpretations, there will be very few if any fans that hate or openly show disrespect to the creator.

Character bashing would not be prominent, if it happens it's discouraged. (I might sound judgey here but I kinda side-eye people who are are okay with or supportive of character bashing only as long as its the character they hate . That's very hypocritical imo.).

There is a variety of fanmade content, ranging from fanfiction and fanart to Abridged series and fanmade music to fancomics. I like it when fans are creative about their content.

When it comes to fanfic there's a little of something for everyone. Crossovers and AUs, for those who like them, Canon/Original flavor for others, and shipfics for others. And trollfics, if you're into that. ALSO...some DAMN good, and even notable OCs. Because I like good OCs. But yeah...basically lots of variety in the fanfic scene. And kink memes for those who like them.

Also people are open minded about all the different types of fanfic as long as its written well. They don't try to tell people who write a kind of fic they don't like to "keep it in their heads" or assume they must write "shitty fic". They know how to read warnings like fuckin' adults (that's probably like asking for the sun and moon though). They don't justify treating people who write something they don't like like shit with "wahh but I'v read SO many bad [whatever] fics".

People are reasonable about the existence of grimdark stuff and r34 and stuff that's not entirely "Family Friendly (TM)" They don't get all shocked or act like its a new thing and the fans who create it are "literally the worst" or "secretly hate the canon". There's no real friction between people who write more G-PG stuff and people who write grimdark, smut and slash. (Ask me about the Truefan -AntiFan wars of '05...or better yet..don't)

That's pretty much mine. Some of these are based on personal gripes but...I don't think I'm the only one doing that.

Less of a focus on shipping. Like, have ships if you want 'em, but they're not the end-all of fandom, nor are they important enough to have shipping wars over. Lots of genfic where applicable. A geeky love of characterization and plot and much discussion about both the writing AND reading sides of fanfiction. No 'stanning or taking yourself or anything about fandom too seriously.

But also, lots of mutual interests outside of fandom and lots of discussions shared by people who have a lot in common besides fandom.

ALL of this so much. That's how the fandom I first got into was (albeit with a LOT of wank), and it was weird when I realized it was the exception, not the norm. :/

Re: What would your ideal fandom be like?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It would actually exist again, first of all.
And the fandom wouldn't be focused on/obsessed with only the characters from the last books but would also remember the cool characters from the first book. There would be fanwork again and it wouldn't be a tumblr circlejerk of maybe 5-9 people anymore, but a lively discussion and fanwork sharing like it was in ye olde days.

Everybody is on one site, a dozen or so people with the same pirings and similar likes and kinks to gush over things together, also 50-100 people with other pairings or whatever.

Re: What would your ideal fandom be like?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Finding this hard to answer! I mean, you can list the ingredients, as it were, but unless there's that special something... that spark. Whether it be great chemistry between two characters, or something about the universe the story is taking place in....

Harry Potter, for example, has many flaws. On paper it is similar to hundreds of books that have come before and after it. But there's something... something that speaks to people and makes them love the story, the universe, the characters. Something that has made it so insanely popular.

People wouldn't be dicks to each other (so no shipwars, no character bashing, no being a total douchebag to someone else because they have a different opinion than you), people wouldn't be dicks to the creators (granted, you could still dislike them if you wanted, but no one would send them or their loved ones hate filled messages), also, no sending (or giving in person) fanfic to people involved in said thing unless they ask for it. There would be a variety of pairings, all of which would have lots of fic. (Even though I would probably only end up reading one or two of those pairings, I realize everyone's different.) Plenty of gen, too. Same applies for fanart. Oh, and lots of wallpapers and icons! Wallpapers are kind of rare these days, and icons for anything that isn't massively popular can be hard to find.

If it's a tv show, we would have weekly discussions about episodes. If it's a game, after new releases there would be a post where people would go to discuss it, and same with new films in franchises.

Y'know I was pretty much stumped on what I'd want in an ideal fandom, but this. This is it.

The fandom wouldn't be making the same baseless theories over and over again. People start threads on these hypotheses like they are grand and new and then the entire community sighs because this is the 1000th time.

Scifi in genre. Lots of possible pairings. Meta discussion. Well written fic that explores not just the relationship possibilities, but explores the world it's set in.

Above all, above anything else, no fucking high school AUs. Ever.

More gen. More CREATIVE gen, that's actually daring and thoughtful and not overly timid and rigid as a result of being preoccupied by no homo.

More good illustration-style fanart.

A strong tradition of in-depth, rigorous fic reviews to make people remember how to process narrative on a level other than cute moments.

LJ fandom is still going really strong and not all messed up by revisions to the format. It's like it was back before strikethrough 07, but with a better categorization system and search engine.

Tumblr dogpiling hasn't been discovered.

The Superfamily thing in MCU fic does not exist. At all. Ever.

That's about it. Fandom without stuff to bitch about isn't much fun.

Plenty of discussion. Predictions, character explorations/meta, shippy meta, analysis of the narrative from a structural or thematic standpoint -- and lots of back-and-forth between members of the fandom bouncing ideas off each other.

A highly active kinkmeme with a good mix of sexy/kinky and gen/PG requests, and a high fill rate.

Fanworks being predominantly fic, but with a sampling of quality fanart.

A fic exchange/Big Bang/fest every few months.

Multishipping as the overall fandom's default, with fans of one OTP respecting other people's ships even if they don't share them. A remarkable lack of murdering the hypotenuse/Ron-the-Death-Eatering.

Lots of canon-divergence/for-want-of-a-nail AUs. Very few everybody's-normal-coffee-shop AUs.

Re: What would your ideal fandom be like?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone who feels the need to badger the creators and actors with shipping or fanon related questions, insist that their OTP be made canon, give them dildos or any stupid things as presents, or harass them in any other way, will be given a swift kick to the ass and then barred for life from fandom.

I can handle a lot, but the lunatic fringe can get the fuck out.

Plentiful well-written fic for every pairing, all of it concisely and appropriately tagged so it's easily searched.

Last Exile fandom: Almost like it is now, were pretty laid back. As far as I know there has never been wank. It would just be much much bigger, and I'd have legions to ship my OTP/OT3 with me with tons of fan art and fics. If I got rid of anything it would be people with the attitude that Fam(Meaning both sequel series and the character herself.) is the most horrible thing ever, and anyone who tries to woobiefy Delphine. Her evil is pure, shameless, and what makes her such an awesome character. Leave it the fuck alone.
