Re: based on the 'Japanese/Korean privilege' thread

I've never dated intra-racially, actually. I'm Indian, and all my boyfriends have been white or Latino.

The very urban environment has very few Indians, and I run the fuck away from every hardline suburbanite, which is what most of the Indians in America I've met actually were. *shrugs*

I will say that in Los Angeles, race is a lot more prevalent than most other places in America (at least according to the out-of-state students I've talked to at school). On the one hand, there are a lot more racist jokes and general amusement surrounding race than they're used to. On the other hand, we apparently take race as a social issue more seriously than they've traditionally seen. Go figure.

Working at a major amusement center, I will say that one of the quicker ways to spot a tourist is to see if they do a double-take at an interracial couple (especially if it's a more "benign" interracial couple like white guy/Asian girl, as opposed to the more "taboo" black guy/white girl). I've seen this happen a lot in my short time working here, and definitely the majority of the people who I've seen do that and then later talked to turned out to be tourists from out of town.

Now here'a a question -- are these tourists from regions with a very high black population? There is nearly as many black people as there are white here in Cincinnati (49% white, 44% black) and black/white pairings (almost exclusively black dude/white girl) are super common. So I'm willing to bet these tourists are from small towns or from mostly-white cities like, well, Portland, Oregon (or Portland, Maine for that matter.)

I work at the Santa Monica Pier, so we get tourists from all over the world, and all over the country. I don't always know where the tourists come from, but the ones I've see this in came from a variety of places (granted, I haven't worked here long, so it's only been a handful of them, and I usually only know roughly what region they're from, or the state based on their ID's).
