based on the 'Japanese/Korean privilege' thread

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any interracial pairings that are common in your area?

Have you ever dated interacially yourself?

My area's overwhelmingly black and white (white being most common) with a little less than probably two percent of other races. And while I'd say there's some interracial dating (black/white is the most common, obviously), it's not especially common.

Huh, go figure.

Yeah, there's a pretty good amount of it - mostly hispanic/white. [which makes sense since it's about a 40/40 split between the two, with the other 20% split between the rest of the races.]

And yes, I have. Actually, most of my partners have been of a different race than myself.

I live in Central Texas. It's pretty common to see Asian (usually Vietnamese, but sometimes Japanese or Korean) women with white husbands. Mexican/white combos are really common too, but there's not really a pattern I've noticed for which sex is which race.

Incredibly common in London, IIRC we're one of the 'best' in the world at it.

For example half of black carribean men are in interracial relationships.

Probably heavily influenced by classism and long colonial history (I know more families who have been angry that there children have dated what they consider 'white trash/chavs' then someone from a different ethnic background).

I was a Japanese Studies student in a central European country and getting a Japanese boy- or girlfriend seemed the thing to do. All the professors had Japanese wives as well. No wonder, considering you come into contact with a lot of Japanese people during your studies, but there were also a lot of people who made it a point to hunt themselves a Japanese partner.

I wouldn't say common, but as I am living near the university there's a lot of foreign students around (generally my country and my city is otherwise pretty homogeniously white). Most interracial pairings I've seen are hispanic/white or asian/white with the white party being more often than not male.

I have never dated interracially, though I had the opportunity of doing so a few times. (I generally don't really date because I am far too chicken to commit to anything)

You would think in the American South they would be rare with the "racist redneck" stereotype but they're actually pretty common here. I've actually seen more black and white couples with kids than in the North. But then in North, the whites are divided more along ethnic groups. So, being mixed there is more like Irish/Italian or Russian/French. So, you see more of those pairing than black and white pairings. While as in the South, whites are bunched together. It doesn't matter if you are German or Irish or Scottish. You are just seen as generic white. So, they don't have that cultural division along the European ethnic groups. One less road block.

Tbf, studies have actually shown that things are more segregated socially* in the North, so that probably impacts it. Particularly given the history of the South and how that tends to work more against socially segregating themselves.

*People tend to live in neighborhoods with people of their own race more often than in the South

Black dude/white girl is the predominant one. Matter of fact, I don't think I've ever seen the reverse here. Or any other combination.

There are a lot of 'Thai brides' in my town.

I'm white and predominantly attracted to black girls. Yet to have a proper relationship though. I suck at dating.

I have dated inter-racially myself (he was Indian, though he was not actually from my area). My own area has a high population of North African Muslim, and there is not that much interracial dating going on because of the religion issue.Fun fact: I never actually dated anyone who is my nationality, but I do tend to skew towards Caucasian is seems.

No and no. This area is overwhelmingly white, and while I can occasionally see some interracial pairings, none of them are particularly common.

There are a lot of black/white couples here, and also a lot of black/Korean and white/Korean couples (military base). Not quite as many Latino/other race couples, but i think i've seen a few at the horrible w-m/around town.

They're common for the area i'm in *because* of the base. But the 'natives' here are pretty much same race/same race couples.

I've never dated intra-racially, actually. I'm Indian, and all my boyfriends have been white or Latino.

The very urban environment has very few Indians, and I run the fuck away from every hardline suburbanite, which is what most of the Indians in America I've met actually were. *shrugs*

I will say that in Los Angeles, race is a lot more prevalent than most other places in America (at least according to the out-of-state students I've talked to at school). On the one hand, there are a lot more racist jokes and general amusement surrounding race than they're used to. On the other hand, we apparently take race as a social issue more seriously than they've traditionally seen. Go figure.

Working at a major amusement center, I will say that one of the quicker ways to spot a tourist is to see if they do a double-take at an interracial couple (especially if it's a more "benign" interracial couple like white guy/Asian girl, as opposed to the more "taboo" black guy/white girl). I've seen this happen a lot in my short time working here, and definitely the majority of the people who I've seen do that and then later talked to turned out to be tourists from out of town.

Now here'a a question -- are these tourists from regions with a very high black population? There is nearly as many black people as there are white here in Cincinnati (49% white, 44% black) and black/white pairings (almost exclusively black dude/white girl) are super common. So I'm willing to bet these tourists are from small towns or from mostly-white cities like, well, Portland, Oregon (or Portland, Maine for that matter.)

I work at the Santa Monica Pier, so we get tourists from all over the world, and all over the country. I don't always know where the tourists come from, but the ones I've see this in came from a variety of places (granted, I haven't worked here long, so it's only been a handful of them, and I usually only know roughly what region they're from, or the state based on their ID's).

I live in the San Francisco bay area and see a lot of interracial couples here. Also, I'm white and I dated a black guy.
