Re: bad managers thread

While there is some truth to this, diet's manager handled things very poorly. It is "scary" for a drawer to be left on a counter, but an effective manager is in control of her/his emotions, and approaches these sorts of situations in a balanced way.

As someone who has been in a supervisory position, I would have taken the employee aside and a) asked why they left their drawer out and b) calmly explained why leaving a drawer out is a big deal. I would not have acted out of fear; I would not have yelled; and I would not have then further berated the employee for being "sensitive." I would also have considered the employee's history, and if the behavior was out of character, would have sought to discover what had changed.

Diet's manager is not taking the body of her performance into account; is not controlling his emotions; and is not responding to the error in a balanced way. That makes him a bad manager.

AYRT

You sound like a good manager. Not everyone is so lucky to get a manager like you, but everyone with a job does have to learn how to deal with their boss. She can't control his actions, only her own.

Yeah, people do have to learn how to deal with their bosses, even when said bosses are shitty, but it's also okay for people to bitch about them. We've all had bad ones, and we'd go crazy if we couldn't talk about it.

I'm also of the mind that people need to speak up about bad bosses, because a bad boss is a company problem. Bad bosses tank morale, increase turnover, drain assets, and hinder goals, and upper management needs to know about them.
