Re: bad managers thread

I get that you're upset, but leaving your drawer on the counter is literally one of the worst things you can do. Try to put yourself in your manager's shoes - he's accountable for all the money and you scared the crap out of him. If he doesn't think he can depend on you, he's going to have to get rid of you. You did react badly and need to calm down, put on your professional face, and be entirely "mea culpa" when you go in tomorrow.

This has shit all to do with him not respecting my emotional boundaries and hounding on me when I was stressed and upset. Not to mention all the other shit this manager does. And that there are appropriate ways and inappropriate ways to respond to something like that.

So, uh, thanks. I guess.

AYRT

I'm not saying your manager acted appropriately, and I apologize if it came off that way. He sounds like a jerk, actually, but he's the manager. I'm just saying your most productive route is to try and see the situation from his point of view and most likely start off with an apology tomorrow as well as some sort of statement as to how you're going to prevent the cash-drawer thing from happening in the future. You can also let him know that you would appreciate it if he would refrain from yelling in the future because it upsets you and makes it difficult for you to do your job. I can see why his behavior shook you up - but a job's a job, and you take a deep breath and go back in tomorrow.

Thing is, anon, I'm not asking for your advice. You are coming across as really condescending here and not only did you not ask if I wanted advice, you didn't even preface your advice with "here's some advice if you want it". You just jumped right in to telling me how to move on with a pat on the head and a condescending tone. I do appreciate the good intention, but it's really not helpful. I get that advice happens a lot here, but yours just comes across as very presumptuous. Sorry.

That doesn't excuse the rest of his behaviour as clearly described in her post.

What amazes me is you think your comment doesn't qualify as a shitpost.

I didn't say it does. I'm trying to actually be helpful, rather than acting as an echo chamber. Sometimes you just have to suck it up.

While there is some truth to this, diet's manager handled things very poorly. It is "scary" for a drawer to be left on a counter, but an effective manager is in control of her/his emotions, and approaches these sorts of situations in a balanced way.

As someone who has been in a supervisory position, I would have taken the employee aside and a) asked why they left their drawer out and b) calmly explained why leaving a drawer out is a big deal. I would not have acted out of fear; I would not have yelled; and I would not have then further berated the employee for being "sensitive." I would also have considered the employee's history, and if the behavior was out of character, would have sought to discover what had changed.

Diet's manager is not taking the body of her performance into account; is not controlling his emotions; and is not responding to the error in a balanced way. That makes him a bad manager.

You sound like a good manager. Not everyone is so lucky to get a manager like you, but everyone with a job does have to learn how to deal with their boss. She can't control his actions, only her own.

Yeah, people do have to learn how to deal with their bosses, even when said bosses are shitty, but it's also okay for people to bitch about them. We've all had bad ones, and we'd go crazy if we couldn't talk about it.

I'm also of the mind that people need to speak up about bad bosses, because a bad boss is a company problem. Bad bosses tank morale, increase turnover, drain assets, and hinder goals, and upper management needs to know about them.

I agree with you, and I think it's important that you point this out. So many people forget that becoming a manager in a fast food restaurant is 90% being reliable, and actual leadership abilities have very little to do with it. The manager handled it badly, obviously, but bad bosses are life, and learning to deal with it is more important than getting sympathy from us.

How very presumptuous of you, anon.

If you have no sympathy to offer, you can always scroll. I promise you I will lose no sleep over it.

Actual AYRT

It wasn't, but go on believing that *two* people couldn't possibly disagree with your opinion.

You expect me to believe that? Everyone basically crapped on the original anon comment and then suddenly here comes this anon comment saying LOL I AGREE. You can see why I might think you're one and the same.

Besides, you all look alike to me.
