Honestly, I think it depends on where you look, both in terms of specific fandoms and the fights itself. There were times Harry Potter shipping wars were hilarious - there were other times it got very ugly, and occasionally came close to ruining the fun stuff as well. So... yeah. Are you looking at the stuff where people are being hilariously OTT, or the stuff where people are creating sockpuppets and bringing real life into things?
