True.

What fun is it if everyone agrees? Disputes can always be taken too far, but for the most part it's entertaining.

Honestly, I think it depends on where you look, both in terms of specific fandoms and the fights itself. There were times Harry Potter shipping wars were hilarious - there were other times it got very ugly, and occasionally came close to ruining the fun stuff as well. So... yeah. Are you looking at the stuff where people are being hilariously OTT, or the stuff where people are creating sockpuppets and bringing real life into things?

A+ picture choice, OP :)

As for the secret...it depends. IA that ship wars are hilarious to watch and have made many fandom the thriving hotbeds they are/were in their heyday. But when there's no way to escape them, they can really ruin the parts of fandom that are fun but aren't just passing the popcorn.

You're a Republican, aren't you.

Well...I dunno.

Disagreement is good, diversity of thought and opinion is good, and competition is good. Echo chambers can grow stale very quickly, and they're never as interesting as forums where there's actual back-and-forth. That said, I don't think there has to be an out-and-out "war" for a fandom's shipping community to be vibrant. I also think that part of the problem with ship wars is that people do take them very personally, almost by definition -- and that's why they have a tendency to get so ugly. They can just as easily rob a fandom of its life as give it one.

exactly and that's why I can't stand them.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
exactly. My main fandom (a small one for sure) was an echo chamber of happy until very recently; we didn't fight about ships because we are all open to multishipping (and canon supports that). But then this little blob of anti-slash people showed up and started stirring shit about how evil anyone who shipped a certain pairing was; and then the entire outward dynamic of the fandom changed. We were known as being accepting and peaceful, but now the first thing people see is this war that was thrown at us. And some of the RPers feel to intimidated to RP anymore.

Well-said. I've often been amused by ship wars and about fandom wars in general, but they can ruin the experience if they get too nasty.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of depends. This might be partly true but I think the way it's been running has also greatly contributed to the really damaging anything-goes-attitude that we now have in places with people threatening others and telling them to kill themselves because they ship something someone doesn't like. Guess it's all fun and games but one day someone really will.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with fandoms I'm barely in or have no attachment to. I've actually seen some really nasty things in ship wars, or had them put towards me. Misogyny, sexism, homophobia, even claiming that you're an abuser/pedophile/rapist (or an apologist) for daring to ship the "problematic" ship of the day. It's hard to distance myself when I see my friends receiving hate or shit because some shipper has a hateboner for the fictional and often hypothetical pairing they like.

I understand the appeal of a passionate argument, but I've just come to the point where I don't want to have it over who's supposed to be boning whom. Even if I'm invested in a couple, I'm pretty okay with people having other shipping preferences.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think anyone who wasn't already a good writer/artist is going to improve because they got into an internet pissing contest comprised mostly of 12 years olds. I haven't been in a ship war in a long time, but sometimes I run into old fans of a popular ship, and they either got good on their own, or like/produce entirely mediocre fanart.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, you sound like you've had a horrible life, but are trying to make the best of it by pretending it's 'interesting'. I feel really sorry for you.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously.

I find it entertaining most of the time, but the part I dislike is when rabid shippers go out of their way to attack or harass people who don't ship their ship, when those people weren't even involved in a discussion or anything and all they'd done is post some art or fic or w/e of the Non Preferred Ship. Fight and scream as much as you want with other people who want to be actively involved in such, but leave the peaceful folks who just want to enjoy their little corner of fandom ALONE.

The problem is that it often escalates really horribly, or most recently, people start trying to affix real world social justice issues on shipping and that is not only not fun, it's also pretty fucking stupid.

Idk I'd just rather everyone get on and let people do their own thing.

?????? none of my friends who produce for fandom have any interest whatsoever in ship wars. tbh that sounds tedious as hell and drains energy away from actually writing or drawing

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
No, I disagree.

I've never seen creativity boost derived from any ship war, only resentment and nastiness. But then, I endured too many barren discussions from petty, stupid reasons when I was a kid to ever find conflict entertaining.

I'd much rather like fandoms when everyone can ship whatever they want and stop nosing in other people's preferences.

I don't like shipping wars within my own fandom, but they sure as hell are entertaining to watch in other fandoms.

...Nah. As somebody who has witnessed a lot of ship wars and been part of some, the debate may be fun for some time but it always ALWAYS gets unfunny very quickly.
