Well...I dunno.

Disagreement is good, diversity of thought and opinion is good, and competition is good. Echo chambers can grow stale very quickly, and they're never as interesting as forums where there's actual back-and-forth. That said, I don't think there has to be an out-and-out "war" for a fandom's shipping community to be vibrant. I also think that part of the problem with ship wars is that people do take them very personally, almost by definition -- and that's why they have a tendency to get so ugly. They can just as easily rob a fandom of its life as give it one.

exactly and that's why I can't stand them.

exactly. My main fandom (a small one for sure) was an echo chamber of happy until very recently; we didn't fight about ships because we are all open to multishipping (and canon supports that). But then this little blob of anti-slash people showed up and started stirring shit about how evil anyone who shipped a certain pairing was; and then the entire outward dynamic of the fandom changed. We were known as being accepting and peaceful, but now the first thing people see is this war that was thrown at us. And some of the RPers feel to intimidated to RP anymore.

Well-said. I've often been amused by ship wars and about fandom wars in general, but they can ruin the experience if they get too nasty.
