I guess it depends on how telepathy works. Is constantly reading their resting state or do they have to work to do it? If it is their natural state to always be "on" and blocking themselves from reading minds takes a lot of effort, then I think it is hypocritical of Erik and Raven.

Then why should telepaths have to limit their power? As long as they are not hurting anyone or using their powers maliciously they are only making people uncomfortable because they have the ability to read thoughts.

I think the problem that's being addressed here is that they're having their privacy invaded, it's worse than just being uncomfortable by how some other person looks.
