I was thinking more of Las Pegasus Unicon ( a similarly mismanaged project to the point where it's been questioned if it was a scam)

That was my thought, too.

Except the people who ran LPU actually have (had?) a shady history of questionable business ventures. Dashcon is basically a bunch of teenagers/barely young adults who have no clue on how to run an event professionally.
