Hey, we have similar hair types! :D

- For a shorter braid, separate your hair in three, braid each strand, and then braid those together. And try interlaced braids to keep it all up? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG4MTltnX7M
It's totally possible to do at hip length, though you may need to fiddle with how you cross them.

- a crown braid will also work, but it may or may not fit under your hat, depending on how loose your hat is. If it's no go, try milkmaid braids instead.

Some are more complicated than you want, but there are several plain buns you can probably fit below your hair (nautilus buns, and infinity buns off the top of my head, maybe knot buns. She uses a lot of hair sticks, but you can hold those with pins as well).
