Hairstyle help?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-07-12 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I have thick, wavy hair that goes all the way down to my hips. I normally just leave it down, in a ponytail/braid, or in a loose bun, and it's not a problem. But at my new job, there's a lot of quick movements in confined spaces, as well as little kids, so leaving it down or in a ponytail/braid is not practical - and I REALLY don't want to cut it.

Does anyone know of any particularly firm/study/steady/secure hair buns, or braids that shortens your hair length? Or even have any ideas on how to look for them?

I've tried searching for work-ready hairstyles, but just about everything on hairbuns I've found would only work if my hair were either shorter or thinner.

I just need something that will keep my hair above my shoulder blades but not much higher than my neck (job often requires I wear a hat), and sturdy enough that I can jog/run or shake my head vigorously and it'll stick.

Please and thank you! :)

You could look for styles of braids that do the whole "wrap around the head" thing, or Leia style buns?

I'll look for those kinds of braids. Any particular styles or types you'd recommend I look for as a good starting point? :)

Dutch braids work pretty well, plus there are some braid/bun combinations that spring to mind [Just google french braid bun and something should pop up.]

Sorry I don't really have anything more specific - my hair's been really short for a few years so I haven't really had to deal with it in a long time.

Having something solid to Google is really helpful, actually, so thank you. :)

Hair donuts! They come in different sizes and do shorted the hair. (I don't secure them with pns but with bands/ribbons.

That's one of the buns that doesn't really stay secure for very long due to the length and thickness of my hair. :(

A crown braid might work.

I'll have to try it. Thank you! :)

MY hair's about like yours and the things that work for me:

-Dutch Crown/Horseshoe braid. Rather than braiding around in a contiguous crown I find it a little easier to braid a horseshoe and then bobby-pin the trailing braid up into the crown.

-two french braids down the back of the head, then tie/weave the ends together at the nape of your neck. This leaves me with a kind of celtic knot at my neck and allows for wearing a hat.

-the more braids you have with the more strands the more shortened it will be. If you can learn to do a four- or five-strand braid that might do you!

All those things sound terrifying for someone who spends most of her life with a chopstick bun, but I think I'll try them anyway. Thanks for the tips! :)

Haha, it is pretty intimidating to start but the key is to practice! I completely blew my first few horseshoe braids, so I wouldn't try it the first time the morning of a big day, but after a while it got to be much easier. Good luck comrade ^^

When my hair was that long, I used to tie it in a high ponytail with an Ouchless band, then tie the ponytail into a knot at the base of the tail, wrap the rest around the knot and secure the whole thing with another Ouchless band.

For braids... well, there's always the Princess Leia one, but I never figured out how to do that.

Mine's not as long as yours, but I find braiding my hair and then curling it up into a bun is stronger than a normal bun.

Hey, we have similar hair types! :D

- For a shorter braid, separate your hair in three, braid each strand, and then braid those together. And try interlaced braids to keep it all up? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG4MTltnX7M
It's totally possible to do at hip length, though you may need to fiddle with how you cross them.

- a crown braid will also work, but it may or may not fit under your hat, depending on how loose your hat is. If it's no go, try milkmaid braids instead.

- Torrin Paige has a lot of nice tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF3508F6411A91FDE
Some are more complicated than you want, but there are several plain buns you can probably fit below your hair (nautilus buns, and infinity buns off the top of my head, maybe knot buns. She uses a lot of hair sticks, but you can hold those with pins as well).

- Oh, and try this one too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvWpHufrANk
I do it with two and one braids, and it does not move. Ever.

I have thick, straight hair that goes past my hips, and recently I've figured out the only effective way I've ever worked out to secure my hair in a bun. I don't know if it quite meets the parameters you need, but here's what I do.

First, I braid it. Then I twist the braid into what would be a bun if I had shorter hair, but ends up in kind of a long knob with my hair. I fold the knob up against my head, and take a sharpened pencil/skewer/hair stick and basically staple it in place, by passing the stick through the hair on my scalp on one side, through the braid-bun, and through the hair on the other side. It's sturdy enough that it'll stay up all day, shaking my head vigorously, etc. I don't know how it'll work with your hat needs, but otherwise it should do the job.

Coming in late but suggestion! EZ Buns. http://www.ezbuns.com I used these all the time when I had my hair at your length, and these were well worth it because they are really easy and hold up very well. At your length, I'd suggest 2 for the double bun; that's what I had to use when my hair was that long and think.

Warning, though, if you put your hair up while wet in these, you WILL end up with a wavy effect. I'm not sure how that would work on already wavy hair, but I actually used these instead of rollers for a long time. (Nowadays I keep my hair short enough I can't use them anymore, which is probably the only sad thing about having short hair... that and I can't use my hairsticks. Which would be my other suggestion for long hair. I use 1, not 2, personally.)

I use hairsticks/chopsticks all the time, but it has the problem of not really holding up under physical stress (jogging or shaking my head). How how do EZ Buns hold up against jogging or vigorous headshaking? They look a lot like hair rollers and donut buns, which both go back to the same problem of "doesn't last that long under physical stress".

Better late than never. :)

I personally have had pretty good luck with them, and they held up better than anything else I tried against stress. The double bun, especially. The other thing is that they take about ten seconds to put back up in place so they are really easy to adjust on the go. Come to think, readjusting often doesn't mean rerolling the bun so much as adjusting the ez bun, so it probably takes less time in actuality.

If you've got the money to spare, I'd definitely try them. :)
