when you stop thinking of "things you love" as the same as your identity

so when people criticize the things you love, you realize that they are not criticizing YOU as a person

Except that what you like does actually say something about what kind of person you are, and that when people criticize the things you love, there's usually a strong implication of "and the people who like these things are stupid/bad/morally depraved."
