do actual capital-p Philistines still exist? isn't it the equivalent of calling someone a Sumerian. nobody is still alive to offend?

DA

According to Wikipedia, however trustworthy that might prove, the Philistines (provided they've been identified correctly in the archaeological and historical records) were absorbed into the surrounding cultures like the Canaanites around about two and half thousand years ago, to the point where we're not really sure what language they might have spoken, since they left no distinct written texts. So ... it's been a while, yes.

They did inhabit a lot of ancient Palestine, which might by what the OP is concerned about?

No, they do not.

Philistines were living around the ancient land of Israel and the origin of their name in both Aramic and Hebrew means "invader". The most popular theory today is that they are of Greek origin.

While their name sounds a lot like Palestinians (deliberately, mind you, since the Romans and Greeks called the area Palestine specifically to annoy Jews) any connection between the two is incidental at best.

I don't suppose you have any kind of citation for the Greeks and Romans calling an area that historically had all sorts of people in it Palestine just to "annoy Jews," do you?
