Why would someone who didn't like comments post their fic in a place where comments are enabled? I've never heard of this though. Have authors really pitched a fit over getting comments?

But otherwise, uh, yeah, there are always going to be lurkers and there are always going to be people who get too anxious or can't leave a review. Sometimes after I've read something that is really mindblowingly good, I can't leave a comment straight away because I'm too overwhelmed and don't know how to express my reaction at that moment. (I do try to come back later and leave a proper comment). Anyway, you can't get upset about this stuff. There are plenty of reasons why someone doesn't comment and some of those reasons are understandable and some aren't but...in the end, it's just not going to change.

Because people are stupid and looking for reasons to get offended.

I've never seen anybody say they disliked comments in general, but I have seen people get angry when somebody left concrit, even if politely stated (of course, sometimes the reviewers could be asses about it, too).

Ah yeah. Well that's a whole different wank.

I've also seen plenty of whining about "This was great!" type comments, because apparently it doesn't count as a comment unless you describe what was great, quote your favorite lines in the fic, and offer to have the writer's internet babies.

Exactly.

I reviewed often.

Then I had a writer rip me up one side and down the other for having the nerve to write a simple, "Great chapter! Can't wait for the next update."

Now I only review those that I know don't mind simplicity.

What site allows you to disable comments?

LJ/DW - you can disable comments. Not sure about AO3, but you can restrict them to logged-in users and disable/hide kudos. But yeah, I guess I mean more, you can choose not to be notified/not get emails so then you'd never see them if you didn't check. I don't know about other sites though. I just imagine if comments really annoyed you, there would be a way post without dealing with them. You could always post them on your own website as well. There's that!
