Yep. Same here.

We've had one episode. Don't write Crystal off yet.

It's been just one episode - we'll see!

I think is what's bothering me so much about the opposition for this show.

Some how, some way, ONE EPISODE has to live up to 200 episodes and three movies.

Are these people fucking kidding me? Jesus Christ.

lol I'm just pleased with the whole thing. I can't look at something through the eyes of a critic. I even got teary at a lot of parts! So happy it's finally here.

I actually got told once that that was problematic because I'm showing these companies that it's okay to produce something cheap. Ruh roh.

First episodes are well known to have some of the best animation of the whole series, since they are done with pressured of deadlines and have some extra budged.

That's why it's hard to believe Crystal will change much or even improve :/

Yeeeeaah, I felt that Usagi looked way too beautiful and ladylike and not flaily enough. I mean, come on, her ridiculous expressions and flailing are such a huge part of her character!

[personal profile] otakugal15 2014-07-14 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
In the OLD anime. Not so much in the manga. She wasn't nearly as flaily and silly faced looking in that than she was in the anime. They bumped it to max in that old show, for whatever dumb ass reason.

She was flaily in the manga, especially in the first chapters.

I like it because it's so more like the manga in terms of the storyline. I'm looking forward to how the episodes will progress, because the anime had a LOT of filler, in terms of storyline. Like... Jadeite dies super duper quick in the manga.

I also like how Usagi was more mature in the manga. She was still silly and emotional, but she was also more mature than the anime let her be. The relationship between the girls was deeper, too.

Naoko is excited for what Crystal can do, as well. She said there's more potential now and things she couldn't do before-- her input is in on the new anime and most of the creators were fans of the show/manga way back when.

That being said, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea and there is a lot of emotion for the original anime. I'm /personally/ excited for it and eagerly looking forward to each episode as it goes along.

(and shamelessly looking forward to seeing Mamoru as his proper 17-18 year old self in his school uniform.)

Like... Jadeite dies super duper quick in the manga.

lol a lot of things happen super duper quickly in the manga because like.... the first arc had 13 chapters and we had to introduce all the senshi, deal with the ~find the princess~ story, get memories back and then stop the Big Bad.

Which is why I'm really happy that Crystal is 26 episodes. It'll give the story a bit more breathing room to develop the relationships between the girls. But it also isn't so much that it'll feel like a bunch of pointless filler.

See, I actually disliked the manga for that reason - they felt TOO mature to me. They didn't read as 14-year-old girls to the point where teenage me couldn't really identify with them at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
LOL what? They all had dreams and talked about them in a cute, flaily way. They had fun with eachother, stressed over schoo, etc.

They were friends and allies, not deep poets.

I will be happy if they cut the entirety of SuperS out. I haven't read the manga so I don't know how much of that was in the original material, but god, it dragged ooonnnn and ooonn.

[personal profile] gabzillaz 2014-07-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
So do I. I'm willing to give it a couple of episodes, but Usagi was at her silliest in the first chapters of the manga, so if she's not doing any faces now...
supermanda: (babes ✥ mars and jupiter)

[personal profile] supermanda 2014-07-15 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I flipped through the manga for you all, and noticed there was an instance where the anime actually made her face even more silly looking than in the manga. Here is the example I could spot (sorry for the cellphone camera quality):

**Not saying this is the only example... I just don't feel like going through the whole thing right now ^^;

There definitely were a lot more examples of the manga having sillier faces than in the SMC episode, but there still may be some hope! I think it might have something to do with the differences in style? Not that I would know what I'm talking about in that area, but I have noticed that not every anime goes to silly, cartoonish faces as often as the way others would.

Either way, they easily could have made Usagi's squished face look the same as her darker haired friend beside her there (tame, pretty, etc.), but they decided to make her go right up to it, which I think is really nice knowing it is Usagi after all.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the designs they came up with just aren't good for expressing anything really. They look dumb and walleyed when they're :o-ing but they're too stiff for anything else to not end up some hideous Code Geass angry alien realness.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
But then wouldn't SMC just be an almost exact copy of the original anime? I honestly don't understand why some people want Crystal to be like the old anime. The 90s anime was clearly directed for a younger audience. The feeling I get with Crystal is they know their audience is older now (in their 20s and 30s) and probably want to move away from the silly tone the 90s anime had which I think is great.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
What does being an adult have to do with humor though? Honestly the episode where Minako purposely tries to get her heart crystal stolen is still one of my favorites because of how funny it is. I am a grown adult and I still love Usagi's silly faces.

Not OP but I am fine with a more mature style and it being different then the original anime, it is more that is very little to no character acting in the animation. And I'm not talking about the extreme gags, there isn't even much subtle stuff going on to be able to tell how the characters are feeling. The voice actors are giving all the emotion in the performance, not the animation.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
SA

I'm not saying that it should be 'super duper srs' and devoid of humor. Just that the original anime was really campy compared to this one. I'm a fan of the original too and the silliness was part of its charm. But I also don't see the point in remaking that version of it with fixing the few changes the 90s anime made with the manga. I already saw and enjoyed that anime and I'm looking forward to the direction Crystal is going.

I actually liked Usagi's portrayal in Crystal because she felt more relate-able and real. But I admit that was mostly due to dialogue and performance and less to do with the animation. So, I agree that the style isn't showcasing as much as it could be. But it's also not that big of a concern for me either. Different personal preferences, I suppose.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've yet to see it, but seeing a lot of comparisons to the first episode of the original, this complaint is completely understandable.

I was going to ask why this was a secret, but after going by the responses in this thread I can see why.
