Okay, it's been a while since I watched Firefly and I'm lost on the connection between cowboy space opera and killing mice with blue nitrile gloves. Can someone explain? Is it a different fandom than I'm thinking?

Also, the "omg ur a murderer" comments are making me lol. They are mice, and OP probably does their best to kill them humanely. It doesn't sound like it's being done for kicks. Chill.

So people have a different view on things than you. Your reaction is to "lol" and telling them to "chill", because "it's just mice".

Maybe you need to learn how to respect other people, because you're just being a huge asshole.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's respectful and not at all assholish to say "you're really gross" and "you're a murderer" and "you're one step away from being a serial killer" and "wish I could avoid you forever."

It is just mice, though, dingbat.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes! You're one of those idiots who think "Respect others' views! Oh, unless they go against mine...then FUCK YOU!"

Yo, I'm pretty sure mice are not sentient. Therefore as long as they are killed humanely and for a good reason, it is not wrong and it is most certainly not murder. That is why you need to chill.

Good job calling other people names because they disagree with you and still thinking you come out on top, though!

They are sentient. It just means able to perceive and feel things. When people say that they usually mean something more like sapient.

/pedant

Also, the way this conversation has gone is one of the reasons I prefer animal welfare to animal rights.

Ah, then I have learned something today!

It sure has been an interesting thread, hasn't it? Boy howdy.

"Self-aware" is a popular term as well.

That's a good one. I like it better than "sapient" since that one sort of has some "humans are the only species that matter" implications what with it being related to the name of our species that wouldn't sit well with people who are more extreme than me in these things. I like to try to meet people halfway as much as I can.

Finally someone with something useful to say about animals! Exactly. No one can debate that animal welfare is a good thing that everyone should keep in mind at all times. Whereas animal rights has come to carry with it unfortunate connotations that they have more rights than humans due to a few who are telling us to our faces that animal lives are more important than human lives.

For such people, the ones overexcited about how humans are all scum who deserve death, I understand the latest Planet of the Apes movie is really good!

Also, since such people are themselves human, I like how dismissive they are about OTHER human lives, but clearly not their own since they are around to make such comments, ie, living in the midst of human civilization and taking advantage of all of it (if you consider internet access an advantage of human technology, of course).

Double standards much?

PS: but no unapproved creepy crawlies inside of human habitats, IMO - eg, inside my own room, no mosquito or spider who hasn't paid rent, no exception. I mean it and I have a ZAPmaster(TM) to prove it.

I think it was in Serenity (though it could have been Firefly, I don't remember, it's been years) the scientists who experimented/whatever on River wore blue gloves (she had a rhyme -- 'two by two, hands of blue'). Though the memories were patchy, it's clear that she associated the gloves with that part of her ordeal, probably because they were an obvious and unusual thing to pick up on.

I assume the poster of this secret can pick between glove types and pick the blue ones for that reason.

It's a reference to the pair of agents who were after the Tams and who always wore blue gloves ("two by two, hands of blue"). They racked up a lot of kills on the way and were directly employed, iirc, by the people who experimented on River.

Thank you to both anons for explaining! I should rewatch Serenity, I think.
