Thank you for being on the front lines in developing medicine that humanity vitally needs. I'm sorry you have to be the one to kill your test subjects.

(My sister needed to kill rats as part of a program that was developing Alzheimer's medication. Weighing the extremely short lifespan of a rodent against a possible cure for a disease that is so horrific, I think I know where I stand on the issue.)

Okay, it's been a while since I watched Firefly and I'm lost on the connection between cowboy space opera and killing mice with blue nitrile gloves. Can someone explain? Is it a different fandom than I'm thinking?

Also, the "omg ur a murderer" comments are making me lol. They are mice, and OP probably does their best to kill them humanely. It doesn't sound like it's being done for kicks. Chill.

I imagine that if I had a job which required me to routinely kill mice, a little gallows humor as a coping mechanism would not be remiss.

A warning for mentions of real life animal cruelty/death would have been nice. Regardless of what people think of mice, or whether it's a "necessary evil" job that OP does, some of us find this sort of thing upsetting (especially when I had to have one of my pet mice put to sleep recently).

I say hypocritical because I'm sure you've had your vaccinations. Those were tested on animals AND are (many are)made using eggs...dumbasses.

I judge any vegan who gets a vaccination because it's made using animal products. Get bitten by a rabid dog? Do the world a favor and die for us. Do you know what Pasteur had to do to develop the rabies vaccine? Also, if you're gonna whine bitch and moan about animal testing, do not get your house treated for pests like mice, roaches, and ants. They have a right to share hanta virus with you, too!

I work in a cancer research lab and I have to kill mice as well. Some are regular, healthy mice that I have to kill in order to extract a certain critical organ to harvest cells. Other mice, though, are injected with cancer cells that we've manipulated in order to track tumor development (after the cells have been manipulated). It's not pleasant work, to say the least, but I think people who have never done biological research don't understand that there really is no way to replicate a living system besides to use an animal model.

Anyway, where I'm going with this is that I had to do an assay recently that required that I kill the animal, chop off the limbs and extract cells. I remember that as I was working, I was writing a fan fiction of one of my favorite characters from a science fiction fandom in my mind. Except the character was in the place of the mouse and was being experimented on by aliens. I don't know if that's indicative of me empathizing with the mice, but I know that regardless, I don't regret what I do. Killing them is the most difficult part, but once they're dead, they're just a body and it's easy enough to do what needs to be done by that point.

People who try to shame you about it are pieces of shit.
