I Do Something Similar
(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 12:41 am (UTC)(link)Anyway, where I'm going with this is that I had to do an assay recently that required that I kill the animal, chop off the limbs and extract cells. I remember that as I was working, I was writing a fan fiction of one of my favorite characters from a science fiction fandom in my mind. Except the character was in the place of the mouse and was being experimented on by aliens. I don't know if that's indicative of me empathizing with the mice, but I know that regardless, I don't regret what I do. Killing them is the most difficult part, but once they're dead, they're just a body and it's easy enough to do what needs to be done by that point.
People who try to shame you about it are pieces of shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 12:48 am (UTC)(link)Hahaha, yes. This anon is a terrible, awful, cancer researcher working for the good of humanity. Hopefully you never have need of their research, dumbass.

Leech suckers are far less dramatic.
Re: LEACHES
(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 06:13 am (UTC)(link)I live in the same street as a medical leech breeder, and the tanks of leeches are pretty cool! They have to be kept in clean water so that all the mud and blood from other creatures is filtered out, so they're pretty hungry by the time they get to the patient.

Re: I Do Something Similar
(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 02:41 am (UTC)(link)Then again, maybe the thing you object to is the fact that so many of us do live?
Re: I Do Something Similar
(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 01:49 am (UTC)(link)And considering both organ donors and people who donate their bodies to science "wind up on the other end of the scalpel," I think it's a particularly honorable position to be in personally.
Of course, the funny thing is, I don't even use a scalpel in my dissections -- just forceps and dissection scissors. But I wouldn't expect you to know that.
