So I'm late to the party, but I thought I would provide some context since apparently it wasn't clear from the secret that I'm not just murdering animals willy-nilly for funsies. I work in a biomedical research lab and part of my job entails humanely euthanizing mice at the end of experiments. It's not something I enjoy and depending on my baseline mood that day it can actually be somewhat distressing. This little bit of fandom-related gallows humor makes it easier to cope with. Thanks to all the pro-research commenters. I get the 'you're a murderer' stuff pretty often, so your support really is appreciated!

Oh, I think people got that alright. It's just the people who are condemning you don't care whether it's for medical or not. :|

Honestly, anyone who says "you're a murderer" should be forced to give up any and all access to modern medicine, in my opinion.

And it's funny too because animals benefit from medical research substantially. My almost 17 year old dog has a lot of joint pain and can barely move some days. Giving her 1/4 of a tablet of prednisone lets her have some semblance of a normal life though, which is only possible through medical research.

Oh, and OP, what kind of mice do you use? I've used two of the more popular strains -- the BALB/c and Black 6 -- and I *heavily* prefer working with the Black 6. They're gentle sweethearts while I found the BALB/c much more aggressive.

DA

Really? It's the complete opposite for me - the black ones are bitey little bastards, while the Balb/cs are the most laid-back, forgiving little darlings.

I used to be really uncomfortable with killing mice for research, and I do still sort of see it as a necessary evil, but I don't think you are evil and I do think it's beneficial. I commend you for continuing your research in the face of so much hostility and aggression, OP. :)

(I've never killed a mouse in a lab, but I have dissected recently-sacrificed mice for class. Once it's dead it no longer bothers me, but I'm kinda glad I didn't have to see the death...not everyone is great with killing, even necessary killing, but that doesn't mean you're horrible for taking that role.)

Echoing the "anyone who calls you a murderer should stop using or having any contact with medicine/vaccines/hospitals" sentiment. The fact that they have the nerve to act self righteous and insult you when your research benefits them just makes my blood boil. And I doubt they'd feel so strongly about not testing on animals for cures to diseases if their child, parent, grandparent, husband/wife, etc. came down with one.

Good on you for doing what you do, OP. It sounds like a difficult job, but someone's gotta do it.

OP, you're doing a great job. Fuck the haters.

No, no, it was clear from context: your thread is just being trolled by one idiot who has nothing better to do all day but post nasty comments all over what could have been a civilized conversation about your Firefly secret.

Please just ignore it (they are all recognizably from the same over-excited, over-aggressive person who wishes humanity as a whole would go die horribly - apparently we all deserve to die because humans are all scum) and keep up the good work: everyone else understood your secret as meant. :D
