Languages of F!S
My first language is actually gàidhlig/scots gaelic, but my fluency in it is terrible compared to my english. At various times I have tried to learn korean, japanese, latin, quenya (I think) and german (though that was taught in school). Right now I am learning esperanto, which is pretty fun compared to most other languages I've tried, swahili, which is hard to find resources for and is quite difficult, but not bad, and spanish, which seems really useful to have but I can't get my head around the genders or why there are several ways to say the same verb and which you use depends on the noun (and what if the gender of the subject and the object don't match?).
I mainly use memrise, which is usually good for individual words, but some courses have sentences as well, and duolingo, which I can only do spanish on right now but hopefully will have some other languages. I also use the various things listed here:

But I should take advantage of podcast courses better.
Re: Languages of F!S
It really helps if you have someone to talk the language you are learning to. And I don't mean over the internet but face to face. You will be amazed how much faster you will pick up a language that way.
Re: Languages of F!S
That is pretty much the reason I am more fluent in english. Hardly anyone speaks gàidhlig.

Other than that I know English fluentlyish and I can make myself understood in Norwegian Sign Language and with some difficulty German.

Mostly I'd just like to find a way to keep exercising the languages I don't really get to use on a daily basis - though, I wouldn't mind learning some more as long as my brain's still willing.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)In my opinion the best way to learn a language is to get a professional teacher, who is a native speaker themself. You'll not only learn grammar and vocabulary that way but also the culture and connotations of saying things a certain way and you'll be less likely to embarrass yourself or accidentally offend someone.

Yeah. I know bits and pieces of languages but I've never cared to go for fluency.

I took classes in French, Italian, and Chinese and I've studied Japanese, Russian, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Persian (Farsi) to various degrees on my own.
I've also made a hobby out of teaching myself to write in different alphabets and syllabaries just because I like the way they look and it's fun to basically doodle in them.

Re: Languages of F!S
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean in uni classes and immersion programs. My Chinese is the worst of the lot, having never been to China, and Korean's the best since I lived there for a while.
I've kind of reached the stage where you're past the initial excitement of learning how to say new things and into the drag of memorizing the less common grammatical structures, and fighting to read faster than "mega slow".
I learned some Russian, but damn that is one torturous language XD
I would love to learn Gaelic or Welsh, actually.
I mostly memorize kanji with Anki downloadable packs.
Re: Languages of F!S
Probably going to take a while before I get any good with any of them, but I can now ask for wine in three languages so... priorities? XD Plus memrise.com is really fun for learning without being overly taxing/demanding on my brain after work.
Re: Languages of F!S
I wish I had taken Sindarin lessons when I knew someone was running them, but I was too lazy.
I am totally monolingual. I only know English. Blame this on being a white person in Australia (we're a remote country whose primary language is English).
