Languages of F!S

[personal profile] icecheetah 2014-07-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Apart from the obvious english, what languages do you speak F!S? And what would you like to? And any good things to share with other learners?

My first language is actually gàidhlig/scots gaelic, but my fluency in it is terrible compared to my english. At various times I have tried to learn korean, japanese, latin, quenya (I think) and german (though that was taught in school). Right now I am learning esperanto, which is pretty fun compared to most other languages I've tried, swahili, which is hard to find resources for and is quite difficult, but not bad, and spanish, which seems really useful to have but I can't get my head around the genders or why there are several ways to say the same verb and which you use depends on the noun (and what if the gender of the subject and the object don't match?).

I mainly use memrise, which is usually good for individual words, but some courses have sentences as well, and duolingo, which I can only do spanish on right now but hopefully will have some other languages. I also use the various things listed here:
http://www.openculture.com/freelanguagelessons
But I should take advantage of podcast courses better.

English. Some Spanish. And I am learning German.

It really helps if you have someone to talk the language you are learning to. And I don't mean over the internet but face to face. You will be amazed how much faster you will pick up a language that way.

Very true.
That is pretty much the reason I am more fluent in english. Hardly anyone speaks gàidhlig.

I speak English (natively), Japanese (well enough to graduate-level work), and French (well enough to greet someone, talk about the weather, and order at a cafe, lol).

I'm fluent in English and German, decent but very rusty in French, good basics in Italian and Japanese. Languages I want to learn someday: Welsh and my country's sign language.

Dutch, Czech, French, some basic German. I understand Slovak, but there's this weird thing where Czechs and Slovaks just talk to each other in their own language and understand each other because the languages are so similar. I did Latin and ancient Greek in high school, but I don't really speak those and they're far away in my memory. Also I did a year of Spanish, but me trying to speak it is an abomination. I can often sort of make out what a conversation is about in broad terms, but that's about it.

Mostly I'd just like to find a way to keep exercising the languages I don't really get to use on a daily basis - though, I wouldn't mind learning some more as long as my brain's still willing.

I'm a native German speaker, English is my second language. Also had a few years of French in school but I've forgotten nearly everything. I'm now learning Turkish. Got the grammar down fairly well but my vocabulary is severely lacking.
In my opinion the best way to learn a language is to get a professional teacher, who is a native speaker themself. You'll not only learn grammar and vocabulary that way but also the culture and connotations of saying things a certain way and you'll be less likely to embarrass yourself or accidentally offend someone.

Oh, and I'd love to learn Japanese and Gebärdensprache (German sign language) some day.

Good point as well, but it's hard to find proffessional teachers outside, well, a school setting.

Native English, fluent French (major), decent German with good grammar but poor vocabulary (minor), teaching myself Italian. Dutch is up next.

I speak Japanese like a child and French like a cereal box.

Yeah. I know bits and pieces of languages but I've never cared to go for fluency.

I speak Mandarin Chinese pretty well, although somehow better when I'm drunk or tired (I'd like to think it's due to years of 8AM language classes). I can also read Classical Chinese although I need some serious dictionary time to do anything with poetry or philosophy, but I can honestly say I've read the Art of War in the original language.

I doubt I'll ever be fluent in anything besides English since I spend too much time hopping from one fascinating language to the next, but I'm okay with that since I just do it for fun.

I took classes in French, Italian, and Chinese and I've studied Japanese, Russian, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Persian (Farsi) to various degrees on my own.

I've also made a hobby out of teaching myself to write in different alphabets and syllabaries just because I like the way they look and it's fun to basically doodle in them.

My native language is English, but my background is mostly Finnish. I'm definitely not fluent in Finnish, but I know enough to get around. I know some Japanese since I studied over there for a little while, and I also know a bit of French.

I know a few phrases in French and German(I can say hello in Gujarati as well but that's not impressive) but for the most part my ability to speak anything other than English is truly horrid. Part of me would like to get better at other languages but I don't know where to begin and my aptitude for languages is shit on top of that.

English and Hebrew fluent/mother tongue.

Chinese, Japanese, and Korean in uni classes and immersion programs. My Chinese is the worst of the lot, having never been to China, and Korean's the best since I lived there for a while.
I've kind of reached the stage where you're past the initial excitement of learning how to say new things and into the drag of memorizing the less common grammatical structures, and fighting to read faster than "mega slow".

I learned some Russian, but damn that is one torturous language XD

I would love to learn Gaelic or Welsh, actually.

I mostly memorize kanji with Anki downloadable packs.

English fluently obviously. I can read a good deal of French thanks to Canadian schooling teaching it. I'm trying to reteach myself French, and teach myself Japanese and German. XD

Probably going to take a while before I get any good with any of them, but I can now ask for wine in three languages so... priorities? XD Plus memrise.com is really fun for learning without being overly taxing/demanding on my brain after work.

Quenya? As in Tolkien Elvish Quenya? If so, I'd say start on Sindarin as it's more comprehensive, then try Quenya.

I wish I had taken Sindarin lessons when I knew someone was running them, but I was too lazy.

I am totally monolingual. I only know English. Blame this on being a white person in Australia (we're a remote country whose primary language is English).

I speak English and Japanese. Native of the former, essentially fluent in the latter (but it's an endless learning process).

I can also vaguely understand Spanish... kind of... in my dreams
