I'm a native German speaker, English is my second language. Also had a few years of French in school but I've forgotten nearly everything. I'm now learning Turkish. Got the grammar down fairly well but my vocabulary is severely lacking.
In my opinion the best way to learn a language is to get a professional teacher, who is a native speaker themself. You'll not only learn grammar and vocabulary that way but also the culture and connotations of saying things a certain way and you'll be less likely to embarrass yourself or accidentally offend someone.

Oh, and I'd love to learn Japanese and Gebärdensprache (German sign language) some day.

Good point as well, but it's hard to find proffessional teachers outside, well, a school setting.

Good point, I guess I'm just spoiled because my country has a great system called Volkshochschule (roughly translates to college for the people). They're subsidized so they can offer courses on a wide range of subjects for comparatively small fees. If you were to take a language course by a privately owned company that would be way more expensive. I'll have to remember to not take that for granted.
