That Remus was the smart Marauder or at least the smartest. Remus was the most studious, but that doesn't necessarily mean smartest. I think it was pretty clear in canon that they were all smart and that James and Sirius were both pretty gifted.

That Hermione isn't actually smart. I've seen people say that she is just well read and logical and not actually intelligent. Which I very much disagree with.

That Harry and Ron are both idiots. No. They are just lazy. I think it is pretty clear that they both get fairly decent grades. I think Harry is a bit smarter than Ron, and they are both clearly less intelligent than Hermione. But I think it is also clear that if they actually applied themselves they'd do really well.

That Snape is a good teacher. Putting instructions on the board and telling students to make the potion without any actual instruction or warning about what bad things could happen is not good teaching. Neither is bullying your students so much that they are completely scared away from the subject.

I had a prof at uni who was a little bit like Snape. He wasn't (that much of) a bully, but he was a very big fan of the "just figure it out yourselves, you idiots" school of teaching, and I can attest to that being a horrible teaching style.

Re: intelligence: I think the idea is that Harry is the street smart to Hermione's book smart. And Ron definitely isn't an idiot either. He's a fantastic chess player after all.

I've had profs like him. Including the bullying part. In fact, my middle school band teacher is pretty much the female version of Snape and is the reason I gave up my instruments and don't do music anymore.

Agreed on all of this.

I can see where people are coming from on the Hermione one since I do think that she has a tendency to rely too much on going by the book rather than coming up with her own way of doing things. That feels like a big part of HBP, but I also think that it ties into her character arc about learning to question authority over the course of the series (with books taking the place of teachers later on as the higher authority that she could always depend on to know best) and it's not that she's not capable of stretching her mind and being innovative since I think she's shown doing that sometimes.

Fanon!Remus is the reason I read very little Marauders fic in spite of him being my favorite. He's either a male Hermione or a shrinking violet. I feel like people forget that he was a Marauder too.

There's no real, you know, evidence that Remus was the smartest, I acknowledge that, but I think it's at least a reasonable piece of fanon. But yeah, James and Sirius are both obviously very smart as well, they're just much less motivated. Especially Sirius.

Agree on everything else. It really bothers me with people calling Ron an idiot especially because it falls right into the general character bashing that he's subject to.

I actually don't think it is a reasonable interpretation at all. I think it is pretty clear in canon that James and SIrius were the brains of the marauders and at least as smart if not smarter than Remus. I think the only reason it is a fanon interpretation is the assumption that more studious=smarter which is not necessarily the case. And the fact that James and Sirius kept up with Remus, got decent grades, and came up with all the magical pranks they did in spite of being lazy and unmotivated says that they were smarter. Remus had to study harder to keep equal with them.

I think that's also a reasonable headcanon! I would probably go with the Remus one personally because I love Remus the most as a character out of any of the Marauders. But I don't think we really see enough of the Marauders, especially as teenagers, to be able to say definitively which is the smartest.

Also, this might be a problem of me not having read the books recently enough, but I got the impression that James and Sirius did all right on grades but not as well as Remus? Which doesn't mean they were dumb - again, they cared about other things - but I definitely got the impression they were behind Remus in terms of schoolwork. It almost seemed like a continuum, with Remus caring the most about schoolwork, Sirius screwing around the most, and James in the middle.

That's kind of funny, because I consider being well read and logical to be important characteristics of intelligence. What on earth did those other people mean?

I agree. There is this idea in fanon that she only gets her knowledge from books and/or other people and doesn't think for herself and therefore isn't actually smart. Which I very much disagree with.
