Why? Having abilities, even special abilities is not automatically a Sue. River wasn't idolized. She clearly had issues considering the damage done to her and she wasn't perfect.

I'd agree with that, actually. But, again, special abilities don't mean Sue. To me a Sue is someone canon portrays as always right, even when they aren't. And they warp the story around them to be the center of everything. Perfection is one version of this but not the only. But I don't see River having anything that suggests she's a sue other than her mental abilities, and that isn't enough.

Now that I think about it, that applies even to Sue types like Anti-Sues and Jerk or Villain Sues.

Anti-Sues are perfectly pitiable and useless. "I am the worst off, ugly little pathetic thing. Pity me!"
Jerk Sues are perfectly jerkass. "Everyone deserves being kicked and you should agree with me even if you think I'm mean!"
Villain Sues are perfectly Villainous. "I'm evil and I always win!"

Sues don't have to be morally right or absolutely beautiful to be Sues, they just have to be cast as right and/or the centre of attention in a way that ends up unfulfilling.

I agree with the above comment, I don't see how River Tam is a Sue. It probably depends on how you define Sue, but to me, Sues have "perfect" qualities, and their "flaws" make them cooler. Additionally, to me, Sues have to be physically attractive and everyone must love them (the cool people must love them sexually) except for the rival.

River is super smart, and apparently super strong, too. I'd agree these are often qualities of a Sue, but that's kind of where River ends. Her intelligence is the basis of her plot line, not a fancy detail. She's not anyone's love interest. She's not really beautiful (okay, I think the actress is, but River is portrayed way too wide-eyed and childish to come across as an attractive woman in the show, I think). River being a lab rat might seem like it makes her "cool" - the cool flaw - but her craziness goes beyond that. She can't function among normal people, therefore is constantly alienated and everyone else is generally freaked out by her. Even as they come to accept her, she's never admired, worshiped or anything like that, as outcast Sues often become.

Now, I think River Tam is the most boring character in Firefly, but I don't think she's a Sue. She's not treated by the other characters as a Sue, and her mental problems are too massive to be a cute character quirk.
