I don't really feel like original characters can be Mary Sues. Bad characters, maybe, but Mary Sue used to only mean fan insertion. Not character who's good at stuff.

I think canon characters can be sues, though it is probably harder. Being good at stuff is not enough. But when you have a character like Richard Rahl who is good at everything without even trying and who does a lot of really bad stuff that canon says is good and who is treated as never wrong by canon, I do think you have a sue.
