Souvenirs from London?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
My father is in London on business right now and I think he'll have a bit of free time, which means he'll bring back souvenirs. What should I ask for him to bring back for me? Nothing too expensive and nothing edible, but otherwise I'd love to hear any suggestions!

It's a little bit kitschy, but I love tea towels and they make all sorts of different themed ones. I prize my Jane Austen tea towel highly, but then I'm a dork.

If you're dead set on no edibles then cool, but... edible souvenirs rock and England has a lot of possibilities between all the types of Cadbury chocolate (better and a different formula than what we get in the U.S.), tea, jams, and neat candies. Jelly babies are delicious!

All the edible souvenirs sound so good but I have digestion issues so I have to pass. :( It's such a shame because (and I don't mean for this to sound like a stereotype) it all sounds like something from Willy Wonka's factory.

Man that book ruined me for candy.

Yeah, whenever one of my parents goes on a business trip to the UK, I always ask for tea.

A book filled with pictures of the landmarks and buildings.

I went to London about 5 years ago, and I still have a mini Rosetta Stone from the British Museum. They've got a ton of neat historical souvenirs, if that's your bag. Similar for the Natural History Museum.

There's tons of pretty fun "cultural" souvenirs if you've got a decent kitsch tolerance. I was fond of the die-cast double-decker buses. They felt a bit more solid than most random souvenirs. And there's a whole range of Big Bens around.

Oh, if you like stuffed animals, the Buckingham Palace guard teddy bears are adorable. I have no idea how much they cost, though.

The historical souvenirs sound amazing! My mother's a linguist, I bet she'd kill for the mini Rosetta stone.

I always love keyrings. Maybe with a red postbox, london underground symbol or similar London related charm?

When my other half is abroad for work I always ask him to bring back some local magazines. I like to see how other cultures do it.

Time Out perhaps? The Radio Times? The Observer magazines on Sunday? Even a free Metro mag might be interesting.

All my other suggestions would be edible, sorry.

That is an awesome souvenir idea.

My only concern if i did that would be the limited snapshot I'd get. For instance the radio times is a verrry limited demographic.

Not gonna lie, Radio Times is my favourite publication in the whole of the UK, even though 90% of it is just listings. It's the most reliably best written magazine there is here. I've subscribed to it for over 10 years now, only for the articles, as I can get the rest online.

If you hate TV or movies, it will be of limited interest. Time Out would be even worse, though, as that's all about events in London. It's still fun to read the 10 pages that aren't listings.

Well yes but the articles only cover TV, radio and films ad is so painfully middle class. Very limited view indeed.

But yes it is very well written.

What wide-circulation magazine is out there that isn't painfully middle class?

I genuinely can't think of one. Perhaps a few shallow style-led ones, which are worse, as they're pretending that that they're not, but are just even more so.

You make a good, and thoroughly depressing, point.

The Sun? Not a magazine though, or indeed something I'd want anyone judging British culture on. :/

Radio Times it is! :)

What an above comment said. If you have an interest in anything historical that's related to England, now's your chance. I slightly regret not getting coasters with Henry VIII and all his wives from the Westminster Abbey giftshop. Tacky yes, but... I would totally have used them every day. Same goes for artwork, incidentally. If your dad's going to be visit any museums, ask him to stop in the gift shop, they're often a good place to check.

Are postcards too obvious? British edition of books, like for example, Harry Potter?

I love love love the idea of the historical souvenirs. I'll definitely ask about them, although I don't know if he'll end up at any museums.

As for Harry Potter, I so want him to bring back Deathly Hallows so that my British HP collection is complete, but my mother made me promise not to ask as she seems to think the book's too expensive there (and probably she thinks Papa will be embarrassed.) So I'll have to get it on ebay.

Well there are three different British Harry Potter covers for each of the books. They really weren't that expensive (two of them come in paperback only)

It's my understanding that books are actually quite reasonably priced in the UK and they often have sales so... it might not necessarily be expensive. Less so if you're willing to have a used copy and your dad's willing to poke around a secondhand bookshop. FWIW, on Amazon.co.uk, the anniversary edition of that book is £6.29 for the paperback.

I always like to get magnets. My mom buys one every time she visits a country/city so you can see where she's been by what's on her fridge. There can be some really cute ones and they're not too expensive.

I'm in the camp of getting keychains or magnets when I go to another country.
