spoilers for Fargo TV series

Did I miss the scene where Bilbo murdered some people for no reason and then had some awkward rough sex?

That's the unabridged version of The Hobbit.

I'm sure it'll be in the extended cut.

D:

There was a hobbit who murdered her relative, but the relative was really annoying.

I'm not sure if hobbits would have awkward or rough sex, though.

Who was that? I don't remember that part in The Hobbit...

No, just the rest of the OP's sentence.

I actually sort of agree. I feel like he always sort of plays the same character but with variations. I don't mind him as an actor, because those types of people exist, but I don't think his acting range is stellar.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You realise that is a total contradiction, right?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the contradiction? Freeman's role as Bilbo and Lester strike me as being very similar in terms of mannerisms and being that everyman archetype, except that Lester is morally weak.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really a fan of Martin Freeman in general. I just can't find him talented or endearing or anything, really. Whenever I watch a show with him in it, I end up wishing his character was played by someone else. He semi-redeems himself by being in really good shows.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. But I don't think he redeems himself at all. I'd rather see another actor all together.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah his acting does nothing for me either anon. It's as if he just plays multiple incarnations of the same character.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've noticed he does that little cough (like he's clearing his throat twice) and quite a bit of gesticulating, in several roles of his. I didn't pay much attention to him before Sherlock, that's why most of the comparisons I see are from John Watson, Bilbo and Lester.

Lester's stuttering and awkwardness was rather Bilbo-ish, but it was his particular cough (the hem hem) that reminded me immediately of John.

I might be one of the few, but I loved him in Fargo. Even if the role wasn't the polar opposite of the sort of character he typically plays, he was still perfect for that role and really impressed me with his acting.

I do wish he would choose a more varied role next time, but I suppose he only has so much control over that (maybe he isn't offered much else? Which may or may not say something about his range). *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
+1

He may or may not be a great actor in a general sense -- I do agree that he tends to play a limited range, and the actors I consider truly great can play all sorts of characters -- but I DO think he was great in this role.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
He's never really broken out of the character-actor mold (that character being the put-upon, practical Everyman with a hidden romantic streak). Luckily for me, I've always had a soft spot for character actors in general, and I've mostly seen Martin Freeman play characters I was already predisposed to like. As a result, I enjoy his performances, but acknowledge that he hasn't really done anything groundbreaking.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Do Americans really say "great *of* an actor"?

Where foes the of come from?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Random American anon - everyone I know usually says it with an of. I've heard it both ways though, and neither sounds wrong but it does sound a little awkward without it (unlike, say, "in hospital" which sounds very, very wrong without the the. That needs to be in *the* hospital).

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I drop the "of" when talking about actors, but Southern speech tends to be different than most of the rest of the US.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Are you talking... about the grammar? Not OP, but I definitely do.

It wasn't that good of a movie.

It wasn't that great of a book.

etc.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to do this a lot in highschool. One day the English class teacher pulled me aside because I'd written a piece where the character *should of* done this thing or *could of* done this thing. Grammatically of course it should have been the contractions *should've* and *could've* but those never occurred to me because spoken aloud the *'ve* sounds just like the word *of*. Maybe this same confusion/lazy way of speaking has just transferred/evolved to be used in other circumstances.

Yeah, he pretty much always plays minor variations of the same character. Fortunately for me, I like that character and I think he plays it well.

That said, his accent was pretty bad and inconsistent. It got better over the course of the series but...hardly "impressive," in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Fargo is in North Dakota, damnit.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but the character is Minnesotan and lives in Bemidji.
