Vee's storyline in S2

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like Vee's storyline was way over the top, but at the same time Lorraine Toussant's performance was so damn good I was sucked in 100%.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much liked the Vee versus Red storyline because it raised the stakes a little. Though I did think Vee was pretty unconvincing as a Master Manipulator and source of danger. I generally enjoyed it but I thought they should have either gone all the way manipulator or all the way violent but I didn't entirely buy the violence when she was so Mean Girls about controlling a gang.

It's based of a book which was written about and by the real life Piper's experience in prison. Probably everything you think is insane and made up really happened.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really.

Oh dear. This may come as a shock to you, but first, people frequently exaggerate in their memoirs, even when it's supposed to be a true-to-life account See: James Frey. Second, TV/movie adaptations aren't always faithful to the book. See: every TV/movie adaptation of a book ever made.

DA Because people don't fabricate experiences and exaggerate on them to sell more copies.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
This. A lot of it DID happen, or a lot of the stuff that happens in the TV show is played off of smaller things that really happened. TBH that Buzzfeed article isn't all that damning - and I think everyone is aware that this isn't a documentary, it's fiction inspired directly from the experiences of one woman.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
You do realize that most fictionalized versions of real events contain things that didn't actually happen in the real version, right? They exaggerate and add things to make it more dramatic. Just look at Argo.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I agree some things are definitely for TV only (not putting a guard on Morello while she parks at a hospital and just leafs through magazines for hours? The cooking prep seems kind of elaborate for prison, I mean, I would have thought that it would be like school cafeteria food - fish sticks, tater tots, mystery meat hamburgers, wilted lettuce, overly mushy pasta with mush marinara, instead they're like getting decent produce and they all seem to make stuff by hand regularly - like when they were mixing stuff and Daya commented about how it was like being at home making tamales with the family for Christmas. I mean, they should get decent produce, but you know, I still would have thought it would be cafeteria grade blah. I went to a poor school district, it shows, I know.)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I would think it would be crap food as well. Admittedly, this comes from my bias: my boyfriend went to jail for a day and talked about how horrid the food was (barely cooked bacon and eggs, really awful mystery meat, etc.) Though, that was jail in a little town and that probably doesn't go along the same lines as a prison.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the prison. Hell some jails are so famous for their meals people will get arrested in those town just for thanksgiving.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Prisons, by & large, receive low-grade meats/produce -- worse than the poorest schools get.

As someone who has spent time in a women's prison, this whole show seems exaggerated and totally fictional, whether it's based on someone's real "memoir" or not. I can't watch it without groaning about all the inaccuracies or conflicts with my own experience. So I don't watch it. It's stupid.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that it's that crazy. Sure, some things are exaggerated, but I've seen crazier.

Welcome to the world of dramedy tv programming. There's never a middle ground, just extreme drama and extreme comedy. I will say that OitNB did a better job of the balancing act in season 2, but it was fairly predictable what was going to happen in the main plotline.

I don't think I'd want a serious show, like Oz but in a women's prison. I think it'd be way too depressing. But I would like OitNB to tone down a bit on the more sillier moments. Like how the guards and prison staff are largely incompetent. That grinds on me.

I think I'd enjoy Oz but in a women's prison.

I recently met a woman who worked as a security guard at a women's prison. I jokingly asked her about Orange is the New Black, and completely seriously, she said she was impressed as to how accurate the portrayal of prison is. Of course, it's based on the real Piper's book about her own real experiences. If some drama is exaggerated or whatever, well, that's showbiz. But apparently the portrayal of actual prison life/atmosphere is more or less spot on.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Don't tell that to the anon's above. Because according to them it's alllllll faaaaaaaakkkkee.

Hello sweeping generalization!

No, it accurately portrayed THAT woman's experience. Not "actual prison life/atmosphere" for EVERYONE EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME. One person is not an adequate sample size. 2 people (this guard and Piper) are not an adequate sample size. AT ALL.

JFC.

It was NOTHING like mine. (I am not an adequate sample size either but just because some random woman you spoke to says it's true to life, doesn't mean it's applicable to everyone.)

You could try Wentworth. It's more realistic and also way more violent. But it goes to crap in series 2 so I'd just stick with the first series, if you can find it. I think it's on DVD, though not in Region 1. It may also be online somewhere.
