What should I ABSOLUTELY NOT forget when going on a trip...

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-07-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm leaving on Friday and I'll be gone for 10 days. What should I definitely pack? What will I regret not taking? Help me out here, gals and guys. I'm scatter-brained and bound to forget things.

If you wear contacts, extras, your holder and solution.

I don't, but that would be useful if I did! I used to wear glasses as a child, but my eyes sort of fixed themselves as I got my growth spurt of whatever.

1. Hairbrush
2. Toothbrush, toothpaste, razor (if used). Soap and shampoo or whatever if where you're staying won't provide it.
3. Socks if needed for shoes, underwear
4. If you need to dress up for anything, make sure you've got shoes that match the outfit. Also shoes appropriate for the amount of walking you're doing.
5. Rain jacket/umbrella. Clothing appropriate for local weather.

Those are all the things I tend to forget about. Have fun on your trip!

I would absolutely have forgotten about the fancy shoes, and yes, there's an event!

(And no where I'm staying don't provide it. It's just food and basic housing with bunk beds). Also, thank you!

My dad told me when I was traveling for the first time to carry an empty trash bag, just one from your kitchen (fold it and find a place for it), and put your dirty clothes in there so that your dirty clothes do stink up or dirty clothes you haven't worn yet. It also made the repacking back home easier for me.

Yeah, I do that. It's a good idea because it's unlikely I'll be able to wash. Your dad is a wise man :)

I have done the same thing as long as I can remember. I use plastic grocery bags, but same idea.

It's great advice, but sadly I only have a day left :(

This is an amazing idea. I will utilize it next time I travel.

how are you traveling? I always bring snacks to munch on because I get hungry on the plane. I try to keep a granola bar in my purse at all times.

I make a list and check it off before every vacation, this way it's a bit more tailored to that vacation.

Make sure you have all the chargers you'll need.

I'm traveling by car, so yeah there will be snacks. Worst case scenario there's gas stations, but those are overpriced, so taking your own is preferable.

Passport, money and tickets. That's it. I like to pack a water bottle so I don't have to search for one when I arrive late at night. Happy trip!

Aside from the usual stuff, toiletries, clothes I need, etc I always make sure to take a book, portable games console, and my tablet with me these days because I know I'll need something to occupy myself with. Oh and also don't forget the chargers(I only go away every other weekend but I still manage to forget my DS and phone chargers sometimes).

I should have those covered, though the only thing I'm not sure of is if there will actually be places to charge the damn things.

Bring nail clippers. If you're flying, put them in your checked luggage, but bring them. If you're bringing expensive electronics like a laptop on a flight, put them in your carryon.

Where are you going? What you need to bring depends a lot on what kind environment you're bringing them into.

i.e. if it's a hot place, then you'll need to bring something to bring down body odor from the sweat, but if it's a humid area I'd recommend deodorant or antiperspirant; conversely, if it's a dry area, I'd recommend scented body spray.

On the flip side, if you're going somewhere cold (but not cold enough that you'll be wearing layers that you'll sweat inside of), then I wouldn't worry so much because body odor won't be as much of an issue, anyway.

Either way, maybe get some dry shampoo? It'll work wonders if you're traveling in a situation where you don't always have time to shower.

Also, whatever electronics you bring, remember to bring the chargers! :)

Toothpaste and toothbrush. Deodorant. Any medicine you take. Pads/tampons (even if you don't think you'll need them during that time). Clean underwear and socks. A book or something to do if you find yourself stuck somewhere and bored. Your phone, and its charging cord - charging cords are really easy to forget to take! A little bit of emergency cash. Your insurance info. Sunglasses.

(I mean that's not everything you should pack, but a good list of things to double-check you don't forget!)

Remembering all my chargers is always a biggie. A lot of other things (e.g. toothbrush, deodorant, razor) if I forget I can buy for a dollar or two at a local drug store.

Chargers are not so easy to temporarily replace.

Any prescription medications, but also a small amount of basic over-the-counter stuff that might be a pain in the butt to buy in an emergency: painkillers, motion sickness tablets if you have that problem, allergy meds and anti-diarrheals. That last one is particularly horrible to try and track down if you're having, ahem, issues.

Chargers for your electronics!! I forgot my phone charger once on a... ten day trip, actually, and it was the worst. I had to keep borrowing from other people at the hostel.

My packing essentials include the following:

Chargers for electronics (laptop or tablet, phone (if only to use as an alarm clock), 3DS, and camera), prescription medication and the scripts themselves, regular OTC things (I always bring paracetamol and antihistamines, and decongestants, although check the rules for those - some places don't like pseudoephedrine), a bag for my dirty clothes, a pocket umbrella, a notebook (with details for flights/trains/buses/whatever, accommodation, directions to places to eat, since I'm vegan and look up names and addresses before I go, and, if it's somewhere with a different language, translations), pens (at LEAST three), my spare pair of glasses, passport (for overseas places only, obviously), and the usual clothes and toiletries (for the latter, I have solid shampoo and conditioner, which makes things nice and easy - thank you, Lush!). And I usually bring my own towel, if only because the places that DO provide them like to give you practically a hand towel.

...Also a crochet plushie which has accompanied me on every single trip since 2010 and has now visited ten other countries over three big trips, but that's more specific to me, haha.

Passport/ID, keys, credit card. Everything else is replaceable.
