Someone asked to translate a fic of mine. Opinions?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Today someone asked if they could translate my most popular fic into a foreign language. I've never been asked this before, and of course I'm thrilled.

Apparently, this person and a small group of friends are translating their favorite fics and posting them to a forum for the fandom in their own language. Credit is being given to the original authors, and a link back to the original story. I was sent a link to her user profile on the site, and can see other stories she is translating, and her own original fic. I would have no control over my fic on that site, it would be posted under her name.

I like the idea of my fic being translated, and nothing is stopping her from just doing it anyway and not telling me. I WOULD like to post a copy of the translation to my actual accounts on AO3 and FF.net, just to have them.

Any advice?

Tell her you want a copy to post to your AO3 and FFN, and that you'll link her to other translations.

Just tell her you would like to be able to post the translated work on AO3 and FF.net but she can post them on whatever site she is talking about as long as she credits you.

I've seen this done before on AO3. I don't think I'd mind, personally, and it gives you a wider audience?

And tell her you just want to post it under your name?

I've translated fics before and I'm not sure I'd like if my work wasposted on another site. A link, sure, but not the story.

I've had some translated. I feel that as long as they give credit to you by saying "translated by [translator name] from the original English story by [your name, with link], it's all good.

(And at least they asked. I've had a few translated without permission (i.e., plagarized), and only found out about it through friends who had recognized where the non-English version came from.)

I've had the honor of several people asking to translate my fic into several different languages. The way I see it, I don't really "own" my fanfiction anyway (being as it's, well, fanfiction), and as long as they ask before doing it. I've only requested that a link be included to the original story, which everyone has done. I have no idea how "accurate" the translations are, but I admit I google translated the author's notes and reviews of someone who translated my fic into Spanish, just to see what they were really saying, haha.

I've done translations in the past to my mothertongue, and when I ask an author for their permission they usually establish their terms. It's perfectly reasonable you want your fic in your own profile (it's your fic, after all), and you should let them know that.

As far as posting to ao3/ff, or other archives, I'd actually prefer if the translator posted it to their own if if IF they had their own profile so that the folk following them for the translations know what's up. Kind of like with podfic I guess.

Still, doesn't seem that they do, so I don't see what's wrong with you posting the translation yourself. Especially seeing that if it's only available in a certain forum, posting it to the main archives helps signal boost the story to more readers and potential translators if that's the case (like with podfic, I'm more likely to waste less time being tentative about asking the author for permission if I already know they're open to it).

Also, lucky you :D

I've always said yes to those requests, and asked for links to the finished products even though I wouldn't be able to read them. Sometimes I received the link, sometimes I received it ages later, and sometimes not at all.

I've also run across unauthorized translations of my fic on the net but it was still credited to me and linked back to the original story. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. If I'm ever going to get into trouble for fanfiction, it's mostly going to be due to the English versions anyway.
