Well, I guess I don't have to play Miasmata or Among the Sleep now.

For what it's worth, I love those games you mentioned, but it IS nice to have an actual honest-to-god real monsters deal once in a while. My only complaint is the Amnesia-inspired trend of First Person Wussers where you're little more than a camera with no arms. I really, really hate that. I want to at least be able to defend myself like anyone would, even if that means just hitting something with a pipe until it flinches so I can run away.

I would recommend Among the Sleep anyway if only because it's so great at being atmospheric. I never get creeped out by horror games but that one actually had me feeling unsettled at points.

Eeeeh, I don't know much about Miasmata, but I would still recomend the Among the Sleep, if just because the "imaginary monsters" twist is really the whole twist, if that makes sense. And it's pretty short.

I feel like it's kind of a phase that horror games will eventually move on from. Sooner or later, some new game will sweep the internet and redefine horror game genre and a whole new slew of trends will emerge.

Probably. Too bad we can't have more games emulating Silent Hill 2. :(

Did you try Outlast? I think you would have fun hating Outlast.

I did try it. Its saving grace was that it reminded me of a trend in horror games about 10 years ago to be hyperviolent with mostly human enemies (Manhunt, Condemned, and so on) but the ending was bullshit and yes, I still dislike how you can't really defend yourself.

I did have fun with it, despite bs ending like you said, but one of the things that really bugged me was that the mc can apparently use his hands for something other than holding a camera in a cutscene. Like, really? All this time I'm not allowed to shove creepos around, why?

YES THIS UGH WTF

Yessss. The MC was actually capable of a small amount of defense in the cutscenes. And he was so hilariously sassy in his journal commentary. Why wasn't there any option to at least actively shove people away (let alone use your free hand to grab a piece of broken furniture, like a chair leg, and use it as a bludgeoning tool...)?

I'd really like a mechanic like that - no murder tools because I appreciate the added stress of not being able to stand your ground and kill, but the option to stun, injure, and slow down enemies before fleeing would be so much more dynamic, not to mention realistic. It's absurd when your character's in a middle of a desperate scenario and you're surrounded by loose pipes, crowbars, even axes and explosives that you're forced to ignore because hey, fuck survival, you have a camera.

I know absolutely squat about video games, but uh....isn't it kind of rude to reveal the twist of a video game in a secret without a spoiler warning, especially when the secret doesn't need to have those spoilers mentioned to exist?

Yeah, yeah "secrets may contain spoilers" blah blah. I don't mean you broke the rules of the comm, just that it's nice to warn for spoilers.

Eh, "the monsters were all in your head" is so rote in survival horror it's barely a spoiler. It's horror's "the love interest dies" in action games.

OP

I tried to stick to stuff where whether or not it's imaginary isn't the twist. In Among the Sleep, for instance, it's pretty much a given from early on that not all of what you're seeing is "real"--the twist is what exactly it stands for. (Most of these games had good ideas--I really liked Lone Survivor in particular--I just feel a bit inundated.)

Edit: Okay, not the BIGGEST twist. I just reread the secret, and I repeatedly called it a twist in the secret itself. Now I feel like an idiot. I'm sorry.

Eh, a few of those are advertised with the "twist" in the game description itself.

I've only played the demo for Among the Sleep, but I kind of thought that it all being in my head was going to be the premise for it. I like the idea of it, and who you play as, but I'm still on the fence about it. Mostly I wanna play it for the teddy bear.

ANYWAYS I honestly just want less "walk aimlessly looking for thing or else the boogey boogey gets you, and btw you can't run for shit or fend it off" games. I'm a pussy no matter what, so every horror game is going to work on me, but I want to stop feeling like I'm playing the same game all the time.

I don't know this game, but am distracted by the cute kitty. And am lol'ing at the thought of some guy in a dark mansion wandering terrified through the halls, seeing imaginary monsters, and the kitty is following him around thinking he is a silly human, but wants pets so humors him anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'd give Among the Sleep a pass. You're playing as a toddler who isn't really equipped to give adult reasoning to the concepts at play. It makes sense that the kid's monsters are such monsters because it's their frame of reference.
