Re: Fandom Confessions!

I feel like I'm too "defensive" of fanfiction. When i'm in a writing community and I see people shitting on all fanfiction writers or some snob talking about how all fanfiction is "shitty" and fanfiction writers are all wasting their time or something or are "horrible scrubs" and I just want to rip into them.

Like I don't have a problem with people acknowledging SOME fanfic can be sucky. But if you hate it and think no one should do it (and have to let EVERYONE know), just fuck off loser.

You're not alone in that. I feel that way whenever people dismiss an entire medium, be it fanfiction or whatever.

Yeah I guess that's part of my problem, dismissing a whole medium. Especially when they have seen like a handful of bad fanfics and are like "I assume you write shit like this".

"all of you must be like the three fanfiction writers I've seen" Because confirmation bias is fun , right?

Re: AYRT

Ayrt

Exactly! There's shit in every medium and there's good stuff too. You just have to look for it or be openminded and ask for recs. I've read fanfiction with fantastic writing and worldbuilding. I've also read books with shitty writing but I don't dismiss all books because of it. It is just ridiculous to do.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah well sadly other people seem to have a tendency to dismiss something because "all the ones I've seen are bad"

(for example within the Fandom community, see OCs)

To be fair though, fanfiction isn't exactly a 'mainstream' thing. So there's a lot of people out there who just don't understand why someone would want to delve into fanfiction.

I just ignore those people and keep writing. Don't let them get to you. But they have a right to their opinion.

I just hate when they start being shitty to other people over it, I really resent them. Maybe it's partly because I had a guy in highschool who teased me about my fanfiction, and even mocked me for it in front of my co-workers.

I used to be like that but now I'm just weirdly fascinated by arguments about fanfiction. Especially ones based on ethics and artistic merit. I don't know enough about the legal issues and I have no way of being sure who actually knows what they're talking about, so I don't really get into the legal arguments. But the rest of it is interesting for me.

Ah. I think it CAN be sketch if someone is trying to profit off it. And I honestly feel like "search and replace" editing a fic into an original work is kinda tacky and usually implies OOCness.

When you edit an original work into a fanfic, it takes WAY more than "search and replace" to make it original. Lots of editing and in some cases reworking some things completely. Maybe less so if it's an AU. But still it takes some work.

Other than that, if people are doing it for fun, people coming in being "HDU you're ripping them off" and stuff is kinda silly. Also people who thing fanfiction automatically makes one a poorer writer? That's kinda stupid.

I'm definitely against profiting off fanfiction. But I'm amazed at how many people think it's plagiarism when the intellectual property is attributed to the original creators and not claimed as the fanfic writer's own.

I'm not really sure what I think about search and replacing a fanfic into an original fic. I tend to spend a lot of time disagreeing with people on that without ever really figuring out what I actually agree with.

" But I'm amazed at how many people think it's plagiarism when the intellectual property is attributed to the original creators and not claimed as the fanfic writer's own."

In a situation like this, it wouldn't be plagiarism, but it could still be copyright violation. A lot of people confuse the two. Most fanfiction is a violation of copyright, and simply tacking on a disclaimer saying it's not yours and you're not making money off it doesn't make it NOT a copyright violation. It just makes it a copyright violation that's unlikely to be prosecuted.

Yep. I'm just being pedantic about the definition of plagiarism and I'm constantly surprised by how few people are with me on that.

I can get not liking a medium/genre if the basic concept/format doesn't appeal to you, or if the the popular trends don't appeal to you and you don't want to bother to dig deeper. But man, does it annoy me when people dismiss entire mediums or genres and shits on anyone who enjoys them.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that last bit is my big problem. I don't like people being bullies over different interests and tastes.

Re: Fandom Confessions!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm defensive too, I think it's normal. I also like to point out that fanfic really isn't that new a concept, the internet just... turned it into a different form.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah that's true. And I don't really see how creating something form an existing work is bad really? I mean if done in a way that is disrespectful of the original author and stuff sure

But...building off of what already exists and doing something new with it is pretty damn cool.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
*Rolls eyes* (At other people, not you - I really did roll my eyes!) It's definitely not bad. If it were, 8th grade English classes where you have to write alternative POVs would be screwed. ;) But I mean, that's the thing, people always do it.

And yeah, I think it IS pretty damn cool, as long as it's not disrespectful or something. Writers always build off of one another in some way or another. Romeo and Juliet is pretty much an AU fanfic.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it is cool. But being cool doesn't make it legal. Just how like a lot of graffiti/street art is cool, but if you're doing it on someone else's property without permission, then it's illegal.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
well I agree that people shouldn't violate the creator's rights and profit off of it. But writing based on really old, public domain stuff? Mythology? Why not draw inspiration from stuff that's already? As long as people doing it are aware the thing's not their's and not claiming as such.

Re: Fandom Confessions!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I've worried about admitting to writing instructors/group members that I've written it... but these days I think the writing community almost expects that. Other people, on the other hand...

You don't have to if you don't want to but if you do and they are nasty to you don't take it too hard. *hug* The problem would be with them and not you.

writing communities can be really self absorbed and elitist about dumb things imo

you should speak your mind and give them what for

IA I tend to speak up nowadays when I see someone dismissing something that could be written and done well with "oh just don't do that, it's bad writing"

That's like my number one pet peeve TBH.

I wish people would learn to separate "what I don't like" from their idea of what "bad writing is"

(hell IMO 'bad writing' is usually more about HOW you write a subject then what you write)
