Tony Stark and Loki. It's not the characters themselves I hate; it's how much the fandom woobifies them and insists that they can do no wrong, often at the expense of other characters that I love.

Thank you, yes. Tony is great in that he is a miserable asshole who treats other people like shit, and whose core instincts are actively EVIL. In spite of that, he's trying to be a hero, and it's a hugely uphill battle for him to do so. That's a terrific character, and Downey is playing him magnificently, but when people act as though the second sentence in this paragraph isn't true, I just have to stare and wonder what movies they've been watching.

I don't think his core instincts are actively evil so much as completely and utterly self-centered. Even in his 'Merchant of Death' era, it wasn't that he actively enjoyed blowing people up or anything, just that until people were actually killed in front of him and he himself was blown up and imprisoned, he never really thought about people getting blown up as people. And then Yinsen happened, and he realised that the things his weapons were killing weren't just numbers on a spreadsheet.

His instincts aren't evil. A lot of them are genuinely protective and coming from a place of care, and probably were all along or he wouldn't have cared about Yinsen at all. It's just that all of them are used to power and to being able to dictate circumstances around him, so unless he cares about something on a personal level, it doesn't matter to him, and when he does care it's in an extremely overbearing and 'fix shit now regardless of people's opinions' sort of way.

But yes, as you say, a lot of the fascination is in watching him a) realise this, and b) struggle to overcome it and become a hero.
