How is it NOT erasure? I mean, the character is bisexual in the comics. No, he doesn't have as many scenes with guys as he does with girls. But that doesn't make him any less bisexual.

But you know, what is really frustrating is a very rare opportunity to have a bisexual male action lead, and they throw that away. How many bi male action leads can you name (who aren't Jack Harkness)? Even a gay action male lead in mainstream media is... well, I can't even think of one. And great, you don't care. Congratulations, I guess.

This is why I found Penny Dreadful to be such a pleasant surprise, because it actually has a bisexual male action lead which I wasn't expecting at all. In fact it's got 2 explicitly bi male characters, one possibly bi female character and one ambiguously gay male character. It's a shame Constantine can't follow suit, but I guess that's because it's not on a specialty channel.

Yeah, no. Penny Dreadful just went the same route of "look, we're treating all sexualities equally" that so many shows go - which means all het (and "lesbian") sex scenes are drawn out and bordering on softcore porn while the male/male scenes are conveniently blacked out. In this case, it really looked like "omg, look, bisexual guys, such a shock" without risking anything by actually showing something. Which I wouldn't have minded, had there been no other sex scenes in that show. But there were, so the ~oooh, bisexual character~ thing was a cop-out in my eyes.

Except they clearly did risk something because there was quite a lot of backlash from homophobes, especially because Hartnett's character was shown to be a womanizer before that. I don't know about you, but the majority of american shows I see only have queer baiting (with absolutely no bisexuals in sight), so this was refreshing. Besides, the creator of the show is gay and Reeve Carney has said his relationship with Ethan will be explored more in the future. Don't jump the gun or complain about it not being explicit enough just yet.

Yeah, I liked that it was the lead male character and that they didn't make a big deal about it. Despite what the commenter below says, that's rare.
