His bisexuality was almost barely touched on during Hellblazer and it all but disappeared when he got folded into regular DC canon. It may as well not have been there for all the focus it got. If you want to complain about bi erasure, you're about 10 years too late.

But he had that hot boyfriend in that hot fucked up relationship that one time that they actually showed us after years and years in print. I agree that leaving out his bisexuality would not change the supernatural focus of the plot, but the fact that it IS ten years later strikes me as being about damn time to be more open about this kind of thing instead of just hinting like the comics did way back when.

It kinda looks like you're saying that turning a gay character straight is bad but turning a bi character straight is fine. I think you mean something like "his bisexuality was never a big part of his character anyway so there wasn't much to 'erase' in the first place unlike if he was some kind of prominent gay character" but the wording here is bugging me.

Did not read Hellblazer, so I'm gonna go with the above OP on info.

If the show decided not to mention his bisexuality, whelp, fine - he could just be interested in women at the moment or a particular one, or anything.
If someone sai, they're conciously "making him straight" though, then yeah, it's a bit dodgy.

lbr here, non-straight leads in shows are so few and far between i don't blame anyone for being mad that the writer refuses to make a character bi when they easily could be and there's original source material to support it.

also, in hollywood, if a writer "hints that it might happen later" that is basically a confirmed "no it's not going to happen but if it gets us ratings we'll keep promising it will".

people get weirdly hung up over people gunning for representation.

it reminds me of people who don't like cosima from orphan black. not everyone has to like her and you're totally allowed to find her story boring, but i'm going to look at you funny if you claim to not understand why she's so popular in fandom.

Well, if he's bi in comic canon, and they make him explicitly straight in the show, then yes, that would be bi erasure. Why do you have a problem with that term? And what's with the scare quotes?

You know, on one hand I can sort of imagine the people who are already pre-emptively screaming about it are terribly irritating. On the other hand, bi people, and yes guys particularly so, get pretty shit representation in the media - both in quality as in quantity. So you know what: it IS a missed opportunity, if nothing else.

I will never understand the big fucking issue with bisexuality. The majority don't think it even exists and you get shat on by both the straight and queer community. And apparently it's horrible to erase gay characters, but it's totally fine to do that with bisexual characters (who are even rarer in media/fiction) because ?????

How is it NOT erasure? I mean, the character is bisexual in the comics. No, he doesn't have as many scenes with guys as he does with girls. But that doesn't make him any less bisexual.

But you know, what is really frustrating is a very rare opportunity to have a bisexual male action lead, and they throw that away. How many bi male action leads can you name (who aren't Jack Harkness)? Even a gay action male lead in mainstream media is... well, I can't even think of one. And great, you don't care. Congratulations, I guess.

You mean when he flippantly said, "Hey, maybe in, like, twenty years..." (knowing full well that the average lifespan of a show like this is 2-6 seasons?)

Honestly, the "twenty years" thing feels less like a "we may address that in the future but haven't planned that far ahead yet," and far more like a tonedeaf "maybe in twenty years people will be ready for a show like this where the main guy occasionally is attracted to other gents."

It's so unlikely that anyone would queer *up* a character that I wouldn't have blinked if they hadn't had to go on about how it wasn't relevant to his character because he didn't sleep with enough men.
