Or rather, your fictional scenario would have a point. But anyone can have access to guns and planes, and the crime rate, as far as I know, isn't actually higher among black people.

and the crime rate, as far as I know, isn't actually higher among black people.

It is.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between crime rate and incarceration rate.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but racists aren't going to admit that. Instead they're going to see that there's a slightly higher crimerate among minorities and blame their race as opposed to poverty or other factors. Which is exactly the point.

It's a bad idea because it literally stems from racism.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and that is where the allegory works. But if you own a gun, you have to be registered. If you own magic gun powers, you should also be registered.

Actually, not all guns require registration.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
And I would firmly disagree with that. I don't think you should be allowed to have the power to kill or maim people and no one has to know. (And yes, you can kill people with a lot of things, but guns do it easier and more often)

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Easier" depends on the person. Knives are more accessible.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
But take more effort unless you have a lucky shot or know where you're aiming.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
...not really?

In my concealed carry class, the instructor told a story about a perp who ended up shot fifteen times by the police. He walked to the ambulance. Knives are way messier, make bigger holes, and bleed more.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's got to be a case by case basis? But knives are used for more things whereas guns only purpose is to shoot or look cool. It would be impractical to have to register knives, as well, because every single person owns at least one so it would just be a census.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering the gun culture where I live, registering guns would be hugely impractical as well. Good luck enforcing it unless you're going to do a house-to-house search, with dogs to find hidden compartments. Plenty of us will not comply because of justifiable paranoia that registration = confiscation down the road.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I own a shitload of guns. None of them are registered. I personally do not have to be registered, either, unless I want to carry a concealed weapon on my person or in my vehicle.

So, no.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
See above: I think you should have to be registered. I don't think you shouldn't be allowed to have guns or that anyone should discriminate against you for it. But I think we should have thorough background checks and registration.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
We do have background checks. You can't just walk into a gun store (at least in the US) and walk back out with a gun without filling out a (I think it's four pages) federal form first. Last time I bought a gun, I think it took about a half hour for the background check to come back.

And once I've passed that background check? It's none of the government's damn business how many of what kind of gun I have.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok. And I don't agree with that. I'm not going to change my mind so we'll just have to agree to disagree there.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Also disagree. You should be registered. Anyone with a firearm should be registered by the gov't, down to how many guns and what kind. Frankly, I think it's more invasive to non-gun owners that gun owners aren't registered, than the alternative.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh well. It's none of your business. Or the government's. How in the world is it invasive to you if I own a gun?

Let me guess, you'd wet your pants if I open-carried a handgun on my hip into the grocery store. But at least you'd know I have it!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
OP here: I love guns. I think they're awesome and as long as you know what you're doing I don't care if you carry one openly. But I still think you should be registered.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
*I* am registered, because I have a concealed carry permit; so does my husband. So maybe that will make you feel better.

How many of what type of guns I have is none of anyone's business but mine.

(no subject)

(Anonymous) - 2014-07-24 00:11 (UTC) - Expand

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's invasive to me because guns kill people. Yes, even legally bought guns by people with no previous criminal record. You want to have something specifically designed for the purpose of killing, damn straight you should be registered.

It is my business if I'm walking by someone carrying a gun, or visiting someone who has a gun, or even existing near someone who has a gun.

Why you don't want to be registered is the real mystery here. Being registered doesn't take anything away from you - but does make you more accountable.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
It is the fundamental duty of government to protect its citizens, and they are more at risk from individuals' weapons than they are from terrorism or invasion.

People like you scare the bejeesus out of me. You don't give a shit about other people, only "mah gunz is sacred".

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
there's a slightly higher crimerate

Um...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
There is. It's poverty-based, though, and you mostly have racial minorities living in poverty due to... Racism. So it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Which is unfortunate.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
But don't people generally have to register if they are going to own firearms? At least, don't you think they should? And people need IDs to ride planes and stuff, too.
