Re: Things you've been thinking about lately

The slow but steady realization that I'm becoming a music grump again, only this time even more elitist than before.

It's weird. So am I but in a different way. Not the usual, "This music too loud and fast! It's noise." For me it has been, "This music is too slow and whiny. How do you even mosh to this? It's going to make me fall asleep!" I am having a hard time finding punk and post punk bands that don't bore me.

Whereas I keep drifting more and more towards 80s synth revival shit and 90s electronica.

Is that even possible? You've been quite the elitist from what I've seen and imaginibg you somehow being a bigger one is kinda hard. Tell me your secrets.

Can you name an example of when I've been elitist about music? And I mean actually elitist, not just "I don't like this band."

(I fully admit I'm something of a video game iconoclast -- hard to deny it when I've made so much noise about how much I hate most late 90s computer RPGs)

Not off top my head. And I sort of meant it in general, which was silly of me. I apologize.

It's cool! I'm just so used to people giving me shit randomly out of nowhere on here I'm pretty much always in defensive mode.

I totally understand. :) I just realized how my post could have been taken after I posted it. You're a pretty cool guy, even if we disagree on stuff. Sorry for the shit you get.

Is it that thing where anti - elitism turns into a form of elitism against people who are elitist? Because I can sympathize with that.

A bit of that, a bit of the regular kind.

I think you just defined hipsters.

That's really ironic considering your taste in music is total garbage.

I'm sorry I don't like your favourite band, anon.

I find this amusing because I'm becoming less of a music grump as time goes on. I just don't see the point in caring.

Me too. I unironically jammed to Nicki Minaj the other day. Fuck it, I ain't getting any younger, my fucks don't have anywhere to hide.

I think "Turn Me On" is a great song and I don't even care who knows.

This is what's happened to me. I don't have the energy to waste to care about hating someone solely because I don't care for their music, or their taste in music.

Weirdly, it's not stuff like Minaj or Beiber that bugs me. That kind of stuff will always be there and it's often good!

It's some of the other stuff that I think is garbage -- for example the "underground" stuff, the stuff that "isn't mainstream" but is just as cookiecutter as the rest. It's pointless to bash Nicki Minaj. Nobody cares, and doing it just makes you look like a try-hard. Counterculture has become a culture in and of itself and honestly trying too hard to "not be a sellout" stopped mattering when they took punk rock out behind the woodshed shortly before the new wave revival of the early 2000s. This is partly why I can't stand dubstep -- it's become the go-to dance music, the "edgy" techno for a new generation when the last generation hasn't even finished arguing over whether IDM was pretentious or not. And I think I've finally hit my limit when it comes to music for younger folks. When I was 25, stuff that was for 17 year olds sounded pretty good to me. Now that I'm 31, those 17 year olds are now 23, and the new stuff for 17 year olds is basically shit like this.

I'm just going to listen to synthpop and tell everyone my favourite band is anyone who outsells Morrissey.

I can completely understand losing patience with "underground" and "indie" music and the crowds that flock to them. It all gets tiring for the same reason that hipsters are obnoxious: you've got a bunch of people trying so hard not to conform that they wind up cycling back around to hyper-conformity. They're everything that they hate, but they think that they're not, and they're dicks about it.

I guess the thing for me is that, even though there's stuff that I hate and think is awful (what is this thing you have linked to, I don't even know what's happening with that), I just don't get as bothered as I used to by other people liking it. Attitude gets under my skin; taste doesn't.

Also, I think it's normal to reach a point where you stop "getting" the stuff that younger people are into. I'm a bit younger than you at 28, but I've noticed that I've gotten to where I'm less likely to enjoy what's currently popular with people in their teens and early 20s. There are exceptions, of course.
