[Game of Thrones]

Yes, he wrote the books. Including the one where Aemon said dragons had no concept of gender and the 'prince' prophecies could easily refer to Daenerys. The only idiocy I see is that assuming that because GRRM created a world that was deeply patriarchal and sexist, that he himself is patriarchal and sexist. He's consistently critical of it, in case you hadn't noticed.

Also, if he was sexist and short minded he wouldn't have so many interesting female characters. It would be a sausage fest with maybe a woman or two in the background because the men need someone to save and/or have a love interest.

Also, GRRM is an old-ass free love hippy from back in the day.

So while he's certainly patriarchal and his books aren't exactly exemplars of feminism, he's also almost certainly aware of these issues in some form, and I think it's an idea he could come up with.

If this is not a troll then this secret is sad. You think just because he is a man he wouldn't want to write something like that? That's a good twist. Authors like twists like that. Where the prophecy was thought to be for one character but LO AND BEHOLD! It's actually for this character.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That would indeed be sad. But I don't see anything about "GRRM is sexist because he's a man", I interpreted it as "why would people expect the books to have enlightened views on the patriarchy because GRRM is part of the problem". Now, whether or not one personally agrees that GRRM is a problem, thinking that he is really isn't a troll opinion since lots of people (here on FS and elsewhere) share it.

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-07-24 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know anyone thought this. I thought it was just a prophecy that got broken before it could come true, to show that prophecies in the book weren't actually written in stone.

Same here. That was actually one of my favorite parts about that whole arc, that one girl could go "fuck it" and end up toppling the Dothraki world of prophecy by both killing her unborn son of destiny and bringing back a previous extinct species all in one twenty-four cycle.

She's Azor Ahai, the prince that was promised, and hers is the song of ice and fire.

I don't think so, IMO Azor Ahai is going to turn out to actually be evil.

SPOILERS ALL

[personal profile] threeeyedsloth 2014-07-24 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, I'm very tired of people who are hoping she's going crazy and is going to end up the villain, and pretending that this is somehow more subversive. As if Dany becoming queen is somehow more trite than Jon being king? Jon is 100% the biggest fantasy stereotype in the books and show, and him being Azor Ahai and a secret Targ and the Prince That Was Promised does make definite sense in the context of the books and wouldn't make me angry, but what DOES get me is the people who in one breath call Dany out for being 'cliche' and say nothing about Jon.

Re: SPOILERS ALL

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-07-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I really think she and Jon are going to share Messiah duties (because of course they are) but I also think they're both gonna die to save the world, along with whoever the 3rd dragon rider turns out to be.

I really fucking hate the Dany is crazy shit. And ugh, Jon. I just dislike everything about him especially him being a Targ.

Just thirding the "ugh, Jon".

Re: SPOILERS ALL

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, there's an argument that being a villain is more subversive, especially on the level Dany would be: one of the last of an ancient royal bloodline, dragon-keepers, with the expectation that she (or another Targaryen) could always reclaim the Iron Throne, savior to the poor and humble, that whole arch from being a powerless girl to the Mother of Dragons... and then it turns out she's not the benign conqueror people thought she'd be, but falls prey to the madness of the Targaryens when all along readers thought she'd escaped it since Viserys was the bad guy. In many ways, that subverts expectations than noble, stoic, honorable Eddard Stark hoisted by his own petard and beheaded before he can do much of anything at all.

Jon really is the most basic, cliche, generic character in the entire series and it sucks that the fandom fellates him so much. I mean, GOT has so many subversive, flawed, interesting characters and people go nuts for the blandest one of the bunch?

So melodramatic and yet strangely hilarious. "GRRM _is_ the patriarchy, you idiots" needs to be a new meme.

I forgot about that 'stallion who mounts the world' thing

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'm going to mentally replace it with 'dog who humps the sofa'.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think those are the reasons Dany won't end up being important, GRRM loves Dany. I feel like Dany was supposed to be super important but the books are taking so long and there are so many theories now, that GRRM will probably do whatever the fans least expect or something to make us all mad just to troll us.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
GRRM loves Dany

sexually.

so yeah she's probably in it for the long run

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I never heard this idea, but it sounds all right. Tolkien was patriarchal as anything and he pulled the no man of woman born thing with Eowyn. Women being underestimated is a common trope, just take out the word patriarchy.
