Are the robots really that distinct in the Transformers TV show? I've wondered that for a bit.

OP

Between the body types and the colors, I find that they are. The Decepticons are harder, though, because they're mostly more subdued colors.

idk about other shows, but they are in TFP (the one pictured).

(Anonymous) 2014-08-22 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not so much in the 80s G1 show, but stuff like Armada (2002 series, not the greatest but I adore it) and Prime (the one pictured) have very distinct character designs.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, are you me? I have a terrible time telling apart actors and actresses in anything live-action. They all look alike to me, especially at first.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have a real problem with faces and names, for friends and family I have to go through a real effort before I can reliably connect someones name to their face.

For live actors, except for the AAA list celebrities who are everywhere, I basically don't even bother, so large cast shows pretty much look like a sea of faces where it's difficult to remember all the characters at any given time.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I can't tell any of the robots or ponies apart (I don't know the other show) so I see what you mean from the opposite side

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a valid complaint about live action shows, because so often the actors look very similar. At least with most cartoons there are distinct patterns or marks for each character.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I watch animated shows because I can't tell actors apart" I get, but where does the part where the animated shows are exclusively for children come into the equation? Not judgin, I love me a good cartoon, just curious.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
and by "exclusively for children" I mean "as a group, all of the shows are for children" before someone gets all ADULTS CAN WATCH THEM TOO

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
The reason I tend to go for the children's shows is that they tend to have brightly-colored characters who are highly visually distinctive; from what I can find, this is meant to be so that the child audience can tell them apart easily. The same idea works on older folks who have a hard time telling live-action actors apart.

The reason it's a secret is that, well, they're all aimed at people much younger than I am. In my social circle, watching pretty much only shows aimed at children tends to get you looked at oddly.

If faceblindness is your issue, though, you should be able to find at least something both animated and meant for adults that you can watch, right? The only difference between the ponies is pretty much their colors and hairstyles and almost all animated shows at least have that.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Western cartoons are largely marketed towards children as their main demographic. So, it's not a stretch for most people to think that cartoons are for kids. And I'd say that most of the writing is geared towards them as well. Sometimes there's a few more grown-up things thrown in for the parents. Which is the flip side. The stigma that if you're an adult and watch cartoons, but don't have any kids is somehow strange. It really applies to anything that's marketed to kids. Candy, toys, video games, etc. Bonus if you're an adult male. Then you're labeled as a pedophile.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Er what? How does that follow from anything I said? It's not that all cartoons are for kids or people might mistakenly think they are, it's that the cartoons in the secret are explicitly targeted at very young children, and the OP has implied that that's all they watch.

Again, not judging. I like some kiddy shows too.

Huh...maybe that's why I tend to watch tv cartoons more than live-action...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
So, how do you get by in everyday life? I'm not trying to be rude, just genuinely curious. Do you get the people around you mixed up? Or do you have something special you do to remember who's who, like notice other things about them?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Real-life people are easier to tell apart. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's that I see them a lot more, so I can pick out the individual details a lot faster.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there's also beauty standards and pretty people on tv mostly adhering to a single physical aesthetic and all that.

Real life doesn't filter out what sort of features you get to look at so you get a good variety.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
There's also things like voices, heights, builds, etc. that are a lot easier to go on in real life than on a TV show.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
As someone with very, very similar issues (I made the LA Noire secret on faceblindness a little while back), I can relate to this strongly. Don't feel bad, OP!

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2014-07-25 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Hey now, there's no shame in watching cartoons meant for a younger audience regardless of your current age. I'm 28 and I love me some Transformers (Animated and Rescue Bots is amazing.)

You have good taste, OP.
