Re: Attempting a no-shampoo run on my hair

I have hair that sounds a lot like yours, except it gets oily near the top if I don't wash it (while the rest stays dry, go figure). It starts to itch and drives me nuts, so I can't stand the idea of not washing it at least on a semi-regular basis.

I have no idea how that thing you are trying works, but let us know if it's successful or not.

nayrt

i've heard that combing your hair regularly can help with that? like, the oils produced by the scalp aren't travelling down the hair shaft properly, which is what causes the oily top/dry rest of hair. apparently combing/brushing is supposed to help distribute the oils more evenly (brushing curly hair can turn it into a fluffball, but even just combing a few times a day should help?).

Oh, I'm sure that's true, but my hair is so thick that combing it from top to ends all the time would be a huge pain in the ass. XD I only comb it when it's wet.

Washing less often, or washing with gentler shampoos (ie. sulphate-free) might actually help with the greasiness after a bit. It could be that your scalp is overproducing oils because your shampoo is stripping them too much. If you let it go for a bit with gentler washing, it might calm down.

Keep in mind that if you go sulphate-free you have to go silicone product-free, otherwise you'll end up with serious build-up issues.

that sounds complicated. o.O but it's worth remembering, thanks anon.

I'm actually pretty satisfied with washing it every couple days with standard shampoo as long as I don't let it go any longer.
