Attempting a no-shampoo run on my hair

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
PLEASE IGNORE THE MISFIRED THREAD BELOW. :(

So apparently if you have thick, wavy, dry-ass hair like I do, one thing you can do is wash with only a silicone-free conditioner every other day, and your hair will start being more healthy/manageable/less of a goddamn disaster after about two weeks and your sebum production finally chills out (since shampoo strips your hair and basically makes it run in panic mode).

I'm four days in and I'm struggling; I really want to wait this out and see if I get results, but it's so greasy-looking and heavy right now that I just want to say fuck it and go scrub with as much shampoo as I can dump on my head.

Has anyone else ever tried anything like this? Any words of encouragement?

I do this. It does take a bit of time for your scalp to sort itself out, but it's worth it when you realize that by doing this you don't need to wash your hair every day.

Stick it out for a week. If you're really really suffering, just use running water and a very good towel-drying to take off some of the oil; it's far less drying to your scalp than using a shampoo.

You really want to also make sure that what you're using it sodium laureth sulfate-free or there's really no point to what you're doing.

ayrt

How would you say the results for you have been? Noticeable difference?

And yes, I had to shop around for a while before I found a conditioner that was both silicone and sulfate free, but I managed it!

Very noticeable. I no longer "have" to shower every day. I'm a pretty greasy guy, but I can wash my hair every other day with no ill effects now... it actually tends to look better on day 2 than it does on day 1.

My face also breaks out less, but that might not be a problem for everyone. Stick with it for a bit, it'll get better after a few weeks at most.

I very rarely shampoo my hair, but I often "wash" it with some apple cider vinegar. My scalp tends to get itchy, so after wetting my hair, I rub vinegar into my scalp wherever it itches and that helps a lot. I also let it wash over the rest of my hair. I don't know if that helps with grease, but my hair never feels oily. I put in conditioner every time I wet my hair and I only use the vinegar if my scalp itches.

I tried the baking soda and apple cider vinegar routine for a short while, but didn't really like how my hair was starting to get with it. Baking soda mixed with water helps actually clean your scalp and hair, and then you use ACV mixed with water as a rinse.
If you want to keep going with just the conditioner, maybe keep it up in a bun unwashed hair is great for a lot of up-dos.

My hair's pretty much the same, and I felt pretty much the same as you when I first tried the no-shampoo thing. But yes, it's worth it. There's so much less frizz, my curls are more defined, there's no uncontrollable bushiness. *thumbs up*

Though, something you might want to do to ease your way: wash with water every day. Some people don't do that, and it helps the shape of the hair even more, but for me it just doesn't work. I wash with conditioner every few days, but I wash with water every day, scrubbing with my fingers and really working over my scalp. The climate where I live is hot and humid, so the sweating doesn't help - washing feels like a necessity!

As another commenter has suggested, apple cider vinegar is also a good way to help your scalp and hair along. I splash a couple of tablespoons in a mug, top up the mug with warm water, and work that into the scalp. Once the scalp's covered, I tip the rest through my hair and work it all the way in. Alternatively, replace the apple cider vinegar with lemon, which also feels nice and cleansing (and smells better than the vinegar, imo).

Hang in there! Give your hair and scalp a chance to recalibrate, and hopefully you'll like the end results =)

I have hair that sounds a lot like yours, except it gets oily near the top if I don't wash it (while the rest stays dry, go figure). It starts to itch and drives me nuts, so I can't stand the idea of not washing it at least on a semi-regular basis.

I have no idea how that thing you are trying works, but let us know if it's successful or not.

i've heard that combing your hair regularly can help with that? like, the oils produced by the scalp aren't travelling down the hair shaft properly, which is what causes the oily top/dry rest of hair. apparently combing/brushing is supposed to help distribute the oils more evenly (brushing curly hair can turn it into a fluffball, but even just combing a few times a day should help?).

Oh, I'm sure that's true, but my hair is so thick that combing it from top to ends all the time would be a huge pain in the ass. XD I only comb it when it's wet.

Washing less often, or washing with gentler shampoos (ie. sulphate-free) might actually help with the greasiness after a bit. It could be that your scalp is overproducing oils because your shampoo is stripping them too much. If you let it go for a bit with gentler washing, it might calm down.

Keep in mind that if you go sulphate-free you have to go silicone product-free, otherwise you'll end up with serious build-up issues.

that sounds complicated. o.O but it's worth remembering, thanks anon.

I'm actually pretty satisfied with washing it every couple days with standard shampoo as long as I don't let it go any longer.

I also have damn thick, wavy hair, but seeing as my hair tends to get oily pretty fast, I actually do the opposite - I only wash my hair once or twice a week (it's too long to really do more than that). Also, I only shampoo my hair (and typically only my scalp and the top half of my hair - I'll let the water sluice the shampoo down the rest of my hair, but I won't scrub it). At most, I'll use conditioner on the tips (while the top half of my hair can get oily in just a day or two, the bottom half of my hair just about never gets oily).

This is going to sound a little strange, but trying sprinkling some baby powder in your hair, then brushing/shaking/toweling it out like you would dry shampoo. I do that all the time when I inevitably run out of actual dry shampoo, and it works wonders on my hair when it's greasy but I don't have time to wash it or go get dry shampoo.

Don't despair, anon! Co-washing isn't for everyone. There are a lot of different methods that curly girls can use. Don't give up!

The forums here and here:

Naturallycurly.com
Britishcurlies.com

Are goldmines of information and links to blogs about curly hair, such as curly Nikki.

I'd start by working out your curl type and hair porosity as those seem to have the most effect on what methods work for your hair!

Keep us updated, anon.

I have done the "no 'poo" before, when it felt like all types of hair care products were destroying my scalp.

The apple cider vinegar rinse that others suggested does help to make it feel less greasy.

I will suggest something else-- consider investing in either a shower head chlorine/chloramine filter (fits to the shower head, anywhere between $50~$100 for both head and filter) or a chlorine/chloramine filter for the whole house (only if you can afford it, haven't tried this yet so I don't know the price). Basically something that helps soften the water... it will help your hair feel soft and it's better for your skin. (The only problem with shower head filters is sometimes it feels like they quit working after a few months and you may need to give it a shake.)

If you stick to the baking soda route, just use a comb to distribute the oil from head to root and tie your hair back in a ponytail. Do both gently, especially if you have any crazy snags. Do it for as long as your hair feels greasy.

If you find you can't stick with it (I have gone back and forth with this), then look into a good shampoo that is sulfate free, paraben free, and phthalate free. Johnson's baby shampoo is good too.

Another tip... if you're tempted to blast hot water, don't do it. It'll make your hair even greasier because your scalp will produce more oils to make up for all the oil being stripped from it.

Have you thought about some more natural shampoos? I like Miessence.
