You are.

You can't forget something like this. It's like trying to forget Hank Pym is abusive to womne, or Dr Light is a rapist. Some things should not be forgiven and forgotten.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hank slapped his superpowered wife once and no one will let him forget it.

Spider-Man slapped his non-superpowered wife when she was pregnant and left her in a crumpled heap as he ran off. Most people probably don't know it even happened.

Oops, I was wrong.

He punched her.

I didn't. But now I hate spiderman. What's your point?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That you didn't know that Spider-Man punched his pregnant wife whereas all anyone knows about Hank is that he slapped her is my point.

Comic books have so many different writers with different interpretations of how characters would react to things that every single Marvel character has done incredibly shitty things even if they're generally characterized as good people.

Circumstances were different, he was fighting someone and she got in the way

sa

Hank slapped his superpowered wife once and no one will let him forget it.

Yeah, they sure got a lot of mileage out of that one. They took an incident that occurred during the midst of a mental breakdown (though obviously that's not an excuse) and ran with it until they decided that it was perfectly sane to make Ultimate!Hank a straight up psychopath who would merciless beat his wife and sicced an army of ants on her while she was still shrunken down. Damn, Marvel.

For those who don't know, mainline Hank Pym knocked Jan down once, she immediately left him, and he basically spent a decade feeling bad about it. Eventually she forgave him, and they later got back together.

When Mark Millar wrote the Ultimates, he took the "wife-beater" meme and went way over the top with it, turning Jan into an abused spouse. Of course this is all set in an alternate reality where the Hulk is a cannibal; Tony Stark is literally drunk all the time; and Captain America (a WWII vet) despises the French as cowards (not a common stereotype for Yanks of his time period). It's all way, way, way over the top.

Mr Fantastic slapped his wife once too

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
To snap her out of her brainwashing

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

A lot of writers have Reed be a dick/neglectful to Sue in general which is too bad because their relationship is pretty cute in the hands of the correct writer

Also hank was literally insane at the time. Nobody ever remembers this.

Also... while I won't say any woman should be struck by her husband, Wasp made some seriously bad choices. Namely taking advantage of his insanity because of his new personality's pronounced interest in her in contrast to pym's normal near asexuality.

There is an obvious metaphor here, but he doesn't realize it. He actually thinks he killed Hank Pym at this point.

And he's admittedly being a pretty big dick himself. Boundaries mister! But wait...

Oh what the fuck Janet. What the fuck.

Now, Janet has realized at this point who he is. He is not in any way stable yet though and she's doing this sketchy shit.

Seriously Janet. What the fuck.

But hey, I'm sure he's all stable now for good right? Or at least that's what she's convincing herself of!

nnnnnever mind. Unsurprisingly, he gets worse until...

That said, when he's better, he thankfully derails where all to many redemption arcs go, and when he's better... own's up to his own shit.

It's less the character's fault and more the writer's though. So I'd blame the writer and ignore that contribution. The character isn't real and I can do whatever I want with them.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's absolute bullshit. They're all fictional. their characters are not dictated by themselves and their own choices, they are dictated by the writers and the canon.

Is Doctor Light actually a fun loving kind hearted guy who was written badly by a writer and now is unfairly cursed by being considered a rapist?

No a writer wrote him as a rapist and now he's a rapist.

Some writer wrote Sam Wilson as a pimp. One of the lowest people in the world. He "got better" but he still abused and sold women. And now he wears the mask of the person everyone in the marvel universe looks up to as a moral center. This is not right.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Comic book writers retcon or ignore all sorts of shit because they don't like (or just don't remember) what other writer's have done. That's just how something works when there's decades of continuity, different characterizations and a billion contradictions going on

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Except this was not retconed out? See above scene? See the sexist shit he is spitting in the modern panel? this is a think they thought to bring up again recently. This is not "shehulk/juggernaut" This is still a thing

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The dcu was rebooted so he's no longer a rapist (and kimiyo hoshi is his wife)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
WHAT?

Oh, I have so many swearwords for that last bit.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Why is it important that we take everything that every writer ever wrote seriously in comics continuity? Because there's been tons of bad writers and bad editors and awful ideas in 40 years. Plenty of stuff that flagrantly contradicts itself. Why do we have to take it all equally? Just throw the awful stuff out and ignore it wholesale.

You, like, need to chill. You obviously also lack reading comprehension because this? "They're all fictional. their characters are not dictated by themselves and their own choices, they are dictated by the writers and the canon." Was my exact argument against you.

So seriously? Calm your tits because it's affecting your ability to read.

And as the anons said above me, if this were any other medium but American comics I could see your point. But this is fucking American comics with recons and rewrites up the wazoo. Nothing is set in stone. Nothing.

Give it a little bit. I bet you his pimp past disappears.

Maybe your problem is that you take comic histories and characters seriously while I think a lot of it is a joke and a shame to it's medium. I dunno.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I know that was your point. perhaps you need some reading comprehension yourself, because my counter point was that your argument goes for EVERY fictional character ever seen doing any thing. If you say "This didn't happen because some writer wrote it so it doesn't count" about something that is clearly still recognised in canon, then what exactly should be included in a characters history? Only things the character chose to say or do by themselves without influence from a writer? You see my point? Your argument about why we should just pretend it's not a part of the canon is bullshit because then there would be no canon.

You're being oddly dramatic about this. Sam Wilson being a pimp was the result of one writer who randomly declared him as such with no hints or build-up many issues after Sam was introduced. Before that, Sam was a pretty normal guy who did pretty normal things (well, normal superhero things). He was basically made a pimp because it was the early 70s and I guess they decided that they hadn't been racist enough with his character yet, so why not make him a pimp?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This is comics continuity.

It's all ad hoc and malleable anyway, beyond the basic concepts.

Well, not for Hank Pym, but that's only because at this point it's the most notable and iconic thing about his character.
