Possible reasons:

1. Someone could have had a realistic disturbing dream about it.

2. You don't have to have experienced something personally to be triggered by the idea of it. You can't always explain why something causes a reaction in you.

1)If a realistic dream gives you PTSD (which is what triggers are actually for, not the shitty Dumblr definition of "this makes me uncomfortable"), then you got bigger problems than fanfiction. And you need to see a therapist ASAP.

2) Then that is not PTSD and you don't need a trigger. It MIGHT qualify as a phobia, but even that is iffy.

I will bear infinite internet babies for the person who can convince the internet that squick =/= PTSD.

HALP IT MAKES ME UNCOMFORTABLE IN MY BIDDY PARTS AND I DON'T KNOW WHY, TRIGGERED

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I love how people with strange triggers can't do anything until they see a therapist. Which of course they're not already doing. Nobody who is seeing a therapist reads fanfiction and makes fandom secrets. It's all therapy all the time. No fun, nothing but years and years of the therapy you need until you're completely cured.

ok, i see your point however much i think it's stupid, but honestly the context of this thread wasn't the best place to make it since OP was literally saying BAD DREAMS CAN CAUSE PTSD

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
But people with strange triggers (such as particular sets of noises, colours etc.) generally don't have the benefit of trigger warnings and don't expect them. They're not there to catch every possible trigger (that's actually impossible), they're there to cover the most common ones. And they also become completely worthless unless there's an established feeling of what should be warned for and what shouldn't, because at that point "no warning" can mean "safe" or "oops".

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I...honestly don't know if trigger is a good word to use here.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yeah. "Trigger" is massively overused. It should not mean "this makes me uncomfortable", which I think it's being used for all the time these days, which is how we get TW on some really stupid shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
But by this argument, we should give trigger warnings for literally everything, since there's no way to tell what someone will have had disturbing dreams or inexplicable reactions to.

What is that thing people say on Tumblr?

I know all that, thanks.

If you know all that, then why are you suggesting that having a dream can cause PTSD?

Yeah, people can have weird triggers, but it's ridiculous and, honestly, insulting to suggest that simply having a disturbing dream is the same thing as living through a traumatic event.

All kinds of things can be traumatic though, and that could potentially include an incredibly intense and terrifying dream.
