I am so glad I ignore trigger warnnings so completely I usually can't remember what the hell they were warning for by the time I read the first sentence of a story.

And would somebody explain to me why anybody would think self-cest would need a trigger warning?

Because people are delicate flowers who need reasons to cry and pour out their feelings.

Honestly, I ignore trigger warnings, unless they advertise something I'm interested in.

Possible reasons:

1. Someone could have had a realistic disturbing dream about it.

2. You don't have to have experienced something personally to be triggered by the idea of it. You can't always explain why something causes a reaction in you.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
1)If a realistic dream gives you PTSD (which is what triggers are actually for, not the shitty Dumblr definition of "this makes me uncomfortable"), then you got bigger problems than fanfiction. And you need to see a therapist ASAP.

2) Then that is not PTSD and you don't need a trigger. It MIGHT qualify as a phobia, but even that is iffy.

But by this argument, we should give trigger warnings for literally everything, since there's no way to tell what someone will have had disturbing dreams or inexplicable reactions to.

I don't know about selfcest, but "mind control" covers anything from actual unrealistic sci-fi mind control to horrific emotional manipulation that happens to have a slight sci-fi justification. In other words, there's a fair amount of mind control porn where you can cut out the words "mind control" and not only will it still make sense, it'll be a fairly accurate portrayal of things some people have gone through.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think this is a very valid point. A lot of mind controls instances happen to have at least an undertone of emotional manipulation also going on, and while it may not be the focus vs. the sci-fi/fantasy gimmick, readers who have been with someone who was controlling might still want to avoid mind control.

I have a seizure disorder, that went undiagnosed for a very long time, and PTSD related to this and to being stalked. One of my worst triggers in fiction are to portrayals of mind control and possession, because that was really what it felt like for me, someone else taking over. Of course, this is an odd enough trigger that I just expect it to go unwarned, but that doesn't mean I don't end up freaked out, hiding in my bathroom and crying sometimes after running across portrayals that hit just the wrong buttons.

Is selfcest really that popular?

Anywho, I can see it possibly being an irrational phobia for some. I mean, people can get triggered by the most innocuous things without realizing that they would be affected by said thing.

I don't know...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I can think of at least one instance of real world resonance selfcest might have - identical twins.

Also, there have been people in cults (and other bad situations) that have been "programmed" into accepting certain things and, really, I would think that's close enough to mind control for people to be upset.

NO IDEA on the selfcest, but mind control makes sense. It's pretty much a form of rape, really... and some mind control fic I've read doesn't even pretend to be otherwise. Mind control isn't real, but dubious consent/rape/manipulation is. So that EXACT SITUATION doesn't happen, but it's close enough that I can see it bothering people.

visual selfcest can look like twincest or incest, especially if the artist has a same face syndrom (is that Dirk or Dave? or are they both Dirk? or just two blond dudes?) or fanon twin representation (Sollux, Psiioniic)

other than that most of the tagging in hs fandom is redundant, especially for prompts

ffs if you just mention that a character dies, or that a character gets abused without explicit details, then the trigger warning would be just as triggering to read, or even moreso if you tag an unassuming psychiatric clinic setting with death, torture and shock therapy

for example jake/jane is only incest if you write it that way, having genes in common doesn't make it incest. so I agree on that front.

The sort of mind control that crops up in fiction is usually totally in the realm of fantasy. But in real life, manipulation akin to "mind control" can and does happen. Brainwashing, for example, is a form of mind control.

The self-cest thing, though? Man, I got nothing.

Mentions triggered responses by name

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I have a trigger for a loss of control, or having someone take away my autonomy. I'm talking physically shaking and suicidal thoughts and self harm. Mind control plays into that reaction. But most of the time what really triggers me isn't warned for, and because it's kind of unique I do t expect it to be. But the mind control one can be handy.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't feel like you're asking an honest question so much as finding a corner case to vent your anger at trigger warnings in general without being yelled at for insensitivity.

That said, I can think of two reasons for self-cest warnings. One, they can still be rapey. And two, they can be an outlet for self-loathing. This short fic illustrates what I'm describing well: http://archiveofourown.org/works/43193

I agree OP, it would be more of a content warning.

I never finished "Time Traveller's Wife" because of underage squicks, but holly shit it had a self-cest scene XD . This disturbed me.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I like it this way.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Selfcest I kind of agree, although it's probably fairly identifiable in the pairings listings even without a specific warning.

Mind control, though, it something I really, REALLY believe needs a warning. Any and all fears or experiences of having your control taken from you and being helpless to stop it (or not even realising it has to be stopped until later) has a chance of being triggered by mind control, including rape, emotional abuse, gaslighting, having periods of mental illness being taken advantage of, being drugged and forced/persuaded to do things while susceptible, and so on. Not even all the methods of mind control used in stories are completely fictional, since I've seen the 'drugged-and-susceptible' one used in mind control stories (MFU fandom, most comics fandoms), at least one fandom I know the main relationship is built on mind-control via gaslighting and taking advantage of mental illness, and all that aside quite a lot of mind control fic I've seen strikes really, really close to rape in its treatment.

Essentially, mind control is based on completely removing a person's ability to consent to their actions or the actions of others, and even if we don't currently have telepathy or hypnotism on quite that scale, there are plenty of mundane means to come close enough that the portrayal is going to hurt like fuck for people who've survived something like that.
